  • Bumper Repaint

What are you guys using to repaint the bumper covers?

Mine has paint flaked off from bumping another car, also has stress cracks in it.
I wanted sand and paint the entire bumper.
Can any one recommend products to use?
From my understanding since the bumper flexes you need to use a flex agent.

Dupont Chroma-Premier says you don't need any flex agents.

I've used pretty much all brands of paint over the years including the ones you've posted and I haven't seen a real difference between adding flex additive and not as far as repeat customers damage. most products these days are already Flexible as it gets it cant hurt to use flex additive but its not guna hurt not to . And as for paint brands that's preference I prefer BASF myself best stuff ive ever used and scene on a car great product.

So you would sand down the paint, spray a primer, sand, base coat, sand, base, coat, sand, base coat, sand clear coat, sand, clear coat?

If its cracked and flaky I would strip it all the way down to the plastic clean it and spray adhesion promoter on it and then prime it sand and then seal it and then base coat skip sanding base coat that's a waste in my opinion and then clearcoat and if you really want to you can sand and re clear it and then sand and polish but not necessary.

Sand it bare and use Bulldog adhesion promoter. I used Dupont Chroma on my front bumper and no flex agent is required.

I'm assuming an orbital sander is the quickest way to get it bare?

You should take a picture of the stress cracks. I was worried about them coming back when I had it repainted 3 years ago, I can tell by looking sthen if they are the same. If they are the same you might want to get a new bumper so that doesn't happen again.

I'll get a picture but I am pretty sure they are from when I did the damage. I bumped into a car when I had it in storage and I'm pretty sure it causes the bumper to flex. I will get pictures though to make sure.

A new bumper cover from RockAuto is 56.79. It says its primered does that mean its good to just sand and paint?

Sanded with 150 to bare plastic by hand. Sprayed with DuPont plastick adhesion promoter. Crest high build primer, matrix base, crest clear. On the 4th gen with a new bare plastic bumper cover, DuPont plastick, DuPont chroma base, crest clear. No need for flex additive the newer paint already flexes fine.

Most of those come with a rattle can crap "primer". Before you spray it wipe it with some wax and Grese remover and see if it wipes off.

So the cat was outside and has back claws...

Luckily she jumped up on the bumper that needs to be done and was sitting on my hood.
She scratched the bumper more but didn't scratch the hood.
Needless to say I was mad when I saw her perched up on it.
