  • Need help ridding my car of orange peel

so my dad hasnt realized yet that when i went home i jacked his buffer. so now i need to hurry up and rid my car of oraqnge peel. can i just buff it with a cutting compound and then a wax/polishing compund to get the shine back or should i wet sand it first? im not 100% sure but i think when we sprayed the whole car we only put 2 coats of clear on it. dont hold me to it but lets just say i only have 2 coats how can i make it look shiny??? or should i just get a decent compressor and lay another coat or 2 of clear on it??

if any one wants to make a trip here one weekend for a case of beer or so im done for that to. thanks for everyones input in advance.

I think you will have to wet sand it.

I don't like wet sanding/rubbing out a car. Depending on flat you make it it can be easy to rub through the paint.

IMO Just washit, clay bar it, give it a coat of wax, and your good. Not many people look at other peoples cars that close. And if they do they won't call you out on it

you dont HAVE to wetsand it to remove the orange peel, but you will burn through a LOT more clear coat than you would if you did wet sand it. Id highly recommend wetsanding it for that reason.

edit: wetsanding is good because it only removes the high spots of the clearcoat, whereas the buffing wheel can cut in between the highspots as well.

no problem good luck! use a light distributed pressure on the sand paper and take your time. You will be able to see by the haze leftover when the orange peel is gone.

I hate wetsanding a car, it can be nerve racking. The last time I did that, a friend of mine repainted another friends outlaw drag radial cobra. it was black and orange peeled to hell. I think I block sanded the whole car with 2000, then went over it with 3000 on a DA and then wheeled it out. Mind you the car was a convertible and it still took me 2 weeks to do everything. (this was working from 5:30'ish after work till 10-midnight everynight for 2 weeks) the final result was much better than what I started with. The car made a golf ball look smooth when I started and went out of my shop looking respectable, probably a 5 footer if you will You can even just sand the tops of the car to make it look better at a glance. Just use light pressure and take your time. using a block would be beneficial in the sanding department. Best of luck to ya!

well my cars a vert matt so luckily i have that out of my way.

so what its looking like is pretty much just pick a panel and do one panel at a time wetsanding it with 2000. and once it all looks smooth then go ahead and wheel it? any suggestions on what compounds to use for wheeling? sorry im not completely new to all this i have an "Idea" of what im doing but nothing exact and can always use advice.

depends on how hard it is to get the sand scratches back out. but yes i like to do one panel at a time myself. kinda take apart one big job piece by piece. I personally like and use Wizards for their compounds. Their finish cut can take out a lot of sand scratches with a nice wool pad but if the paint is a bit hard you might have to hit it with their "turbo cut" first then go back over it and step your way down to a finer pad with the finish cut.

google search Wizards, I'm sure you can find something. I get it from a distributor that brings us our supplies at the shop. I know some napa's and even mazza autoparts carry some wizards stuff, usually you can find their compound if anything

I have a lot of different products and different brands of different types of compounds. there isn't one that is good or bad, every different one just has better uses for different finishes and results. Kinda just one of those things that the more you try the more you'll find out what works for you.

....random mention, 1 street over my neighbor has an F-430 spyder and as i typed this he did about 100+ going by lol....end rant...
