I guess its fairly common. You can pull the EGR valve off and put the plate on. If you do that you can also remove the solenoid which is located on the coil bracket (little black thing with 1 plug going into it and a couple plastic tubes going out). Then put a small vacuum cap on the throttle body nipple that feeds the solenoid. You will probably get SES light, especially if you disconnect the signal wire on the EGR valve itself. This can be eliminated in the EEPROM though.Originally posted by ssgtgaines View Postwhats up i have a sticking egr valve on my 86 firebird with an 89 350 tpi motor. will i be alright if i just remove it and block it off. i know it will probably set the mil, but will i have any driveability concerns. is this a commmon thing because i see they sell the plates

Yup, my EGR is blocked off and throws an SES light after the car warms up.- Brian Meissen

It might lower the temps in the CC very slightly. But it isn't going to do it much.Originally posted by ssgtgaines View Posti'm not saying you guys are wrong ,because experience will prove to be corredt but does't the egr help lower combustion chamber temps. you guys that have them blocked off do you experience any detonation. once again if you guys say it's ok with them blocked off i'll give it a try. thanks

EGR mainly acts to effectively reduce the displacement of your engine by reusing burnt gases instead of pulling in new fresh air. Theoretically this improves gas mileage and lowers emissions by burning any left over fuels.Originally posted by ssgtgaines View Posti'm not saying you guys are wrong ,because experience will prove to be corredt but does't the egr help lower combustion chamber temps. you guys that have them blocked off do you experience any detonation. once again if you guys say it's ok with them blocked off i'll give it a try. thanks
BTW: you shouldnt get detonation because EGR is only active during low load cruising.

Yeah, what Matt said. Granted, I just have a stock 3.4L v6... but I've actually noticed my car running slightly better with the EGR blocked off... maybe due to the fact that it was so clogged up.- Brian Meissen
