  • Phabmouth installed. me likey!

Its been a long road, but I think I have finally found the exhaust I like! I have had a hard time finding a good flowing/ sounding exhaust that doesn't rattle and bang against the bottom of the car. Or vibrate so many pieces inside it that I cant hear the stereo. That changed today. It wasn't exactly the bolt in that I had hoped for but I think I am finally there now.
I have Speed engineering stainless headers, I bought their y pipe but ended up going back to the LPP that I had on it before. The Speed pipe wont go into the tunnel, or allow the use of the tunnel brace. So, since there was going to be modification needed I went back to the LPP Y pipe.
I had to modify the D.S. header first. The Speed header points up on the drivers side, which puts the Y pipe into the cross member, which beats the living heck out of itself. That banging used to drive me nuts. So I took a 1/4 inch section out of the bottom of the collector, and a wedge up both sides. After welding, the Y pipe end of the collector is about 5/8ths lower.
While I had both headers off the car I swapped in poly motor mounts. This is the time to do this!!! (Unless you are like myself and neglect to do it even with the motor out of the car, because who need easy?) easy peasy with the headers out.
I also used this opportunity to port the inlet side of the headers. I forgot to take any before shots but we've all seen what a mess the manufacturer can leave inside the headers. All clean and smooth now! And at least 3/16 more room to breath!
So the cut and weld on the header left the Y pipe running down hill on an angle. So I cut a wedge out of the pipe half way between the cross member and the collector , and welded that back together. this gave me 3/4 of an inch between the Y pipe and the cross member. Its a little lower to the ground that I was aiming for but I wont know how low till its off the stands. I think it will be ok. I also welded the slip joint on the passengers side of the Y pipe. Initially I was worried I would have a hard time installing the Y pipe due to the header angles but it goes on no problem.
The outlet end of the y pipe shrunk down to stock diameters. That just wouldn't do. I cut the reducer from the y pipe which left me a nice 3 inch exit, but now I was about 4 inches short in length. And the angles were a little off. So from an old stainless Y pipe left over from the LT1 ,I cut a 6 inch piece with the outer, female slip connection on it. I had to mock everything up at this point to get the cut angle on the filler piece right. once that was done, I tacked the filler to the Phabmouth inlet. This was the only part I was hesitant on. I really didn't want to alter the Phab exhaust system but I figure I could always cut it back off If I had to. Once I had the angles on the connector piece, I tacked it to the Phab cat back pipe. I had to remove everything and fully weld this joint . Then I used my 90 degree grinder to cut slits in the female sides of the joints. Installed everything again and mocked up the tail pipe tips. I did have to cut the tail pipe section on the passengers side 1/2 inch shorter, and tweak the drivers side hanger a bit to get things straight and centered in the back. I tacked the tips in 4 spots for now, some day I will complete the beads
Ill get some pictures up soon and maybe a video soon as possible

Its a tad on the loud side with my foot in it, but I think Ill be alright with it.

try not to focus on the crappyness of the welds , welding stainless with my Harbor freight non tig wire feed welder is kinda dicey at best.

I remembered to take a picture of the header porting after installing one of the headers, and Like I said earlier, I completely forgot to take a before shot.20141226_204924.jpg20141226_204921.jpg20141226_204914.jpg

I am hoping that my "lifter tick" was a exhaust leak that is currently not present. I haven't warmed it all the way up yet but maybe Ill get lucky.

I really liked it when I had it on my car too. They have a good quality system.

                Thanks Larry.
Nate, youre not running it anymore? Why did you remove it, any loudness problems?

Appreciate the work but without cats and that merge, rasp may be your next battle.

I drove it a bit today and it wasnt that bad. I like it. But to be honest, I was going to use Speed Engineerings Y pipe , bought one to use. Damn thing wont work. It has a better merge but its too far back

on my car the rasp was only bad for a tiny tiny bit of the rpm range.
