  • Best sounding muffler on stock exhaust?

My '02 SS exhaust is all stock (manifolds, cats, Y, dual pipes/tips). Right now it has a 40 series Flowmaster, but it's coming apart inside and rattling. That would be the second one that has done that...not good for Flowmaster. I like the sound of it, but it's time to move on. I'm not looking for a catback exhaust, just a muffler only. I've been checking the Magnaflow, Dynomax Ultraflo and Hooker Areochamber. I've been told these are all quiet at idle, but sound good on accel. Also had thoughts about a "bullet" style muffler. From what I can tell, they mount in the pipe in front of the rear axle and then a pipe is welded between the duals where the stock muffler goes? Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks!

I would get a Hooker or GMMG.

I had a Hooker on my LT1 car and loved it.

Lots of people have GMMG, its just awesome.

GMMG on an LS1 is just tits, IMHO.

          Hooker.

GMMG sounds good if you plan on NEVER removing the cats.

Yeah, I've heard GMMG is bad! It's a catback (don't see just a muffler option) and a little pricey for me. Can't decide between a bullet, chambered or "straight through" muffler such as Magnaflow. It's hard to find sound clips, because a lot of people run headers and a ORY. Just trying to keep it stock, but sound decent. Thanks.

That's the only reason I put a set of high flows back on. Back then they were still reasonably priced though.

I originally was thinking Magnaflow or Dynomax UltraFlo, but heard those are pretty quiet on a stock exhaust. I'm just trying to get away from the Flowmasters. I've had them on every car I've owned! Is the Aerochamber the same sound? Being chambered, I wondered. You would think a "straight through" design like Magnaflow or Dynomax would be louder. Plus, I hear the Hooker is HUGE! Still debating the bullet also. Maybe too loud. Would like to know where and how those mount? Is a pipe just welded into place of the stock muffler location if I want to use the factory dual pipes and tips? Eventually, I will make up my mind!

I put a magnaflow c/b on my dads 00 T/A and its quiet to me. Sounds great for the sound but not to loud.

On an LS, best sounding cat back for STOCK manifolds IMO is the LM1. When I purchased my Camaro back in 11'. It came with the LM1 already on it, but everything else was untouched and it sounded very good IMO..

I have since then switched to a magnaflow bullet. Which is called a "magnamouth" because I changed resonators, and I absolutely love the sound.

Thanks for the link and info.! Some good stuff there. Trying to save some $ and just get a muffler. A catback is a touch too much right now. Where about is your Magnamouth mounted? Could I still run the stock dual pipes and tips with one? Also, not to sound dumb, but does my car have a resonator in the stock exhaust? Didn't think it did...

The magnaflow bullet is mounted exactly where the SLP LM1 was clamped. Just had to replace the magnaflow with the SLP and have it welded.

Only pic I have of the SLP before I changed it. It was mounted near the T.A.

You get pick up a used set pretty cheap. Just need to browse classifieds on here, craigs list, and even ls1tech all the time.

When I bought the magnaflow for my dads T/A, I got it on here for $140 I believe.

Yours just should be 100% stock if you did not touch the exhaust. So would consist of stock manifolds,y pipe, all the way back to the muffler and tips. For muffler yes you can stick with dual tips. Even if you wanted to add a bullet and remove the muffler you can.

But if I were you, I would just save for a catback.Would be less hassle for you, and probably save a little bit on labor cost doing it all at once. Even if you wanted a bullet, it would still roughly run you $85 maybe. Factor in labor cost and some cutting and welding and you are probably $130 range (since most shops I know charge at least $40 or so /hr of work) . Little bit more money you can pick up a nice used catback and be good to go

Hell, I went to a junkyard with an old friend and he found catback on this 00 camaro and snagged it for $80 .And that was a borla.

Nice, got it. Looks like it's welded in the pipe just before the rear axle. Your car sounds good! I like it. I may look into the Magnamouth, I'll have to talk to my local muffler shop and see if the can weld a pipe in the stock muffler location to connect the duals. And see how much they would charge! Thanks again.

$80 for a Borla catback!?!? That's a steal! Nice work!

I'm curious to know what you did and what muffler you went with.
I may do this instead of cat back myself.
