Yeah..don't need a welder to cut metal. You'd need a torch for that. A hack saw, sawzall, exhaust pipe cutting tool all work. If you mean weld to weld back in a hunk of pipe you can do that or just clamp a new piece in place. Don't let the feds catch you without a cat or you'll get a big fine.

Ok.. Seriously, how often does the Feds bust someone for not having a Cat.Originally posted by GETGONEYeah..don't need a welder to cut metal. You'd need a torch for that. I looked into the laws of cat converters. Don't quote me on this but I believe that you can only get excessive noise which is like 100$ fine fix it. Shops that do illegal modifications to street cars can get the big fines. I guess if you were doing it yourself and got caught you could get busted too but seriously how would that happen?

Plus, I thought emission laws were goverened by the States.
Its up to the state to enforce it or not, so I don't see the Feds busting you.
The Feds set guildelines and standards that the Manufacturers must follow in order to sell in all States.
Not exactly sure why the local muffler shop can't remove it.
And there might be a rule someone what says in Michigan it has to have its original equipment on it, but who is going to check when they have so many other things to bust you for..
I guess the more common scenario might be if you remove you cat, then take it to an exhaust shop in the future, they may refuse to work on it.
Note: I am not a laywer, this is just my opinion. Please take it at that.Currently Owned F-Bodies

around here you wont get in trouble for having no cats. unless of course youre running open headers and the cop thinks its a little loud. they can check under your car to see if you have one and if you dont youll get in trouble, but why would they do that if its not obnoxiously loud? as long as youre still going through a muffler youll never get checked for having no cat. btw.. cutting the cat out is no big deal but you need a welder to put a straight pipe in. i think thats what he meant.

Yep, the old "ram a pipe down the cat till you knock all the filament out" trick works great. then just put it back in. looks like you have one but in acutallity its a straight pipe, lol. Done it lots of times on older cars, not sure about newer ones on how sensitive the sensors are.Originally posted by gtpson99Just take the Cat down and take a pipe and bust the inside stuff out of it. Once it is back up visual no one could tell the difference if you have a Cat or not.

yeah, an airhammer works great for gutting a car as well, and pretty much cali is the only place you really need to worry about the emmissions crap, and i heard jersey is anal on that stuff too.....Last edited by meissen; October 23rd, 2006, 05:37 PM.1998 Camaro SS Bullseye Turbo

If you know the right person, you could get it done. But let's not name any places, because it IS technically against the law for them to do it and jeopardizes their businesses.

i've never heard of anyone being ticketed for lack of emmissions in MI, and i can't see how it's illegal for a shop to do it with a disclaimer saying for OFF ROAD USE ONLY....on a side note....strictly cash and a handshake generally get your cats taken out by most exhaust shops

It's a FEDERAL LAW!!! If I shop removes a cat or replaces a cat that isn't damaged or has more than 80K miles on it they can get HUGE fines. I had a guy that didn't want to touch the cat on my 98 Sonoma with ~83K on it because he thought they upped the FEDERAL emissions warranty on the cats to 100K instead of 80K. It was still set at 80K and I replaced the cat myself. On my 98 Sonoma it was under the 80K Federal warranty and was replaced by GM for free.

hey
yea i can cut it myself not a problem.... but..... welding it i dont have the tools.... and a shop wants 150 $ for a new cat... and i'd rather have no cat and save money and have louder car
