  • MAF'S, looking for info

Hey guys, Has anyone here ever Descreened/Ported/bought ported maf ends/bought a granatelli MAF? Im looking for any info from anybody with a 4th gen but more specifically a 97' like mine.

It seems most of the opinions Ive read so far from other sites can be sumed up in :

LEAVE IT ALONE & DONT F**K WITH IT!

but I would like real life experiances from the people on this site.

And does the 97' MAF have a screen? Because I took mine apart to clean it and paint the ends and there wasnt a screen that I remember.

When I got my car the screens were removed. I replaced them. They arent really a restriction at my HP level and they act to make the airflow even across the tube (smooth out turbulence) so the MAF gets an accurate sampling.

Stock MAF w/ screens should be good up to around 550 rwhp.

On LS1 cars they recommend descreening the MAF in the LS1/LS6 performance book I bought. The air comes in straight in front of the MAF so it's not as turbulent as if it were coming from the side and twisting around. They said on the LSx trucks to leave the screen since the air has to make a 90 degree turn almost to go into the throttle body. I descreened my MAF when I got it. I had also descreened the MAF in my 4.3 V6 S10 previous to the Camaro. Z06's don't have screens in their MAFS. I haven't ported or polished mine and don't really know what kind of effect that has. You can buy larger ends but I don't know if that messes with the calibration on it or not.

like matt said, the screen is so the MAF can accuratly read the incoming air, a previous owner of my car had taken it out, it doesn't make much difference, it just makes tuning the car a little more challenging sometimes from what i've heard.....since mine didn't have a screen, i just did a swap-a-roo with my parents TA MAF

So to make my MAF work properly I should reinstall the screen. Can you still get these at the dealer?

I think that your car will still run properly, but it might thorw the A/F out of wack a little. My car doesn't have one, but no reason it not to.

Don't have any experiance with descreened MAF's on LS1's (yet) but on my TPI it caused some tuning headaches......went back and switched to a stock MAF and all was good under the hood!

I've read on the LS1's it leans them out some which is OK since they run rich from the factory. Most of the aftermarket MAFS are sold without screens.

Well my car does run rich but I always assumed that was due to it needing a tuned PCM ( which is probably most of the problem) but anything that will help I'll try so now I just need the screen.
