  • Loud Exhaust Fix it ticket

[rant] So I was out driving my car the other night, pulled into my local Sunoco. Filled it up with gas, pulled out of the station and got pulled over by a Brighton PO. He has a backup car block me in, runs all my info, comes back with nothing. As he is walking away he walks back and says "this thing was pretty loud when I pulled you over wasn't it?" So he has me start it up, says it is too loud, goes to his car, and prints me out a fix it ticket. I feel like he couldn't just let me go with out a ticket. Just to make it known, I was as nice as I could have been. Pulled over, shut the car off, turned dome light on, and put my hands on the wheel. I put a stock catback on my car, took it to the 53rd district courthouse, asked an officer to come out and inspect it, he said "I thought you said you fixed it, I can't sign this". At this point I don't know what to do about it. I feel like they basically just want the fine money. My engine is louder then the exhaust at this point. From behind the car you can barely hear it. The officers here are known for giving younger people a hard time, so I think I may have my father go with me and try to get it signed off again. [rant/]

The officer told me anything louder then it was from the factory in 1996 is too loud. As the car is right now the engine is much louder then the exhaust. I can't tell the officers anything, to them I am just some kid. The officer also told me my noise level was unsafe, which does not make sense to me. I am 100% sure it would be less then 88 DbA right now from 50 feet away, that is if I read that test right.

If you have a smart phone get a dB app.

Did he come out to inspect it?

We have a guy that will just run out, check the car out, and sign the ticket.

Did you tell him it was a factory 1996 exhaust? X2 on the db meter, and taking your dad is probably a good idea

Take it to a local PD station and not the district court or have anyone sign off on it (police officer) doesnt have to be Brighton either.

Not all are bad. Unfortunately some of them have resorted to these petty tickets to get $$$$ for the city.

Really interesting to see that law excerpt - I was always told there was no decible limit in Michigan as long as the car had a muffler. Here's the part that would apply to our cars:
                    (c) A motor vehicle or a combination of vehicles towed by a motor vehicle not covered in subdivision (a) or (b):(i) Eighty-two DBA if the maximum lawful speed on the highway or street is greater than 35 miles per hour.
(ii) Seventy-six DBA if the maximum lawful speed on the highway or street is not more than 35 miles per hour.
(iii) Ninety-five DBA under stationary run-up test 20 inches from the end of the tailpipe.

If I understand this correctly at idle the car can have a DBA of 95 at 20 inches away from the tailpipe?

Are they going to come with a scan tool to see that my TPS was showing 75%? It would be funny to set my limiter at 2500 rpm on the Mallory box. Where I live there are TONS of lifted trucks with stacks and loud Subarus buzzing around. I guess I will see what I can do, I don't have a phone that can get those sort of apps on it. If they say no to signing it as it is now, should I request a DB meter testing? What if they decline to test it. The officer was pretty adamant that anything other then factory is illegal, but he never looked at it to see what it was or not.

It really just seems like they're forcing me to pay their "malfunctioning equipment" fine.

Yea, I would find anyway possible to have that overturned. Every county has that one "strict" cop. Nothing we can do about it
