  • MAF/TB/Intake questions

Hey guys - piggybacking off my list of exhaust questions, I am looking for a little preliminary info on the intake side as well. Again - street car, looking for it to be a reliable, headache free operation.

My understanding is that the stock MAF and TB are something like 75mm. I'm looking to do a few performance upgrades, but nothing drastic. Don't even know if i'll ever do an aftermarket cam. Current thoughts are:

    Lid
    Potz ported MAF
    Pots ported TB
    LS6 Intake
    Stock exhaust Manifolds
Upgraded "Y" with high Flow Cats
Some catback (currently leaning towards magnaflow)
    PCM Tune

My question is on the intake side of the list above - is there anything I should or shouldn't be doing? Any tuning issues with porting the MAF and descreening? Any issues in running the 75mm with the LS6 intake? Should I go with a larger TB and forego the ported stocker, or would this be sufficient to support my plans?

    lid is a great mod
ported TB is good for a few hp
Id say leave the MAF alone as I dobt you'll see any gains with ported ends or descreening
    LS6 intake, good choice
stock manifold won't be ideal but if your looking for a quiet car then running cats and a stock exhaust will be very mild sounding IMO
    pcm tune is very worthwhile

So, the MAF wouldn't be limiting the effectiveness of a ported TB? If the MAF isn't the bottleneck in the intake, I'll save myself the cash.

Not at all, a stock ported TB will also support your goals just fine.

I have a ported TB and the only difference i noticed was better throttle response, that was my main goal anyway.

I also have a SLP maf, only reason i have that installed is cause at the time i got it for a steal, and between the stock and the slp maf, the tuner said with my new incjecters that the slp maf would be needed anyway, not sure why, but thats what i had on it when they tuned the car. i doubt a different maf would make any difference at all with your setup.

Dynoed a built 416 not long ago with a stock ls1 maf.
With and without the maf was 2hp diff .

Descreening the maf has been known to cause issues with how the maf reads

That's what I was concerned with. I de-screened and re-screened my MAF on my old '99 L36 Grand Prix, and never noticed a difference with an autotap. Never had the car on a dyno though.

Any tuner will tell you never to de-screen a MAF that came with a screen.

I asked mine about that and they said it was no big deal?

Here's a dumb question - are '98-'02 MAF's all the same, or did they change at some point?
