  • Put the SS back to stock exhaust

So, first real item I've done on the SS since picking it up - the previous owner had the stock muffler hacked out, all other piping was stock. It actually didn't sound as bad as I thought it would - still too raspy and too much drone for my taste.

Here's what I picked up the car with:

I managed to find a complete OEM catback from a WS6 in Macomb on Craigslist - scored it for $20. Unfortunately, the guy had cut it in two places to remove it, so I couldn't just bolt it in. Ended up taking it to Mr Muffler over on Card and Hall Rd on Saturday and had them cut the pipe square and expand the end for a slip fit for $20. Hacked the stocker off with a cutoff wheel (it was a darn messy looking cut, but I cleaned it up afterward). After a few hours of trying to fit it, cussing, and doing a few 12oz curls, it was hung. I wasn't able to get the stock piping into the expanded pipe as far as I would have liked, but I torqued the clamp down really tight and it seems to be holding OK - no leaks noticed. Fired it up and was pleased to hear a little rumble still - also, noticed that a critter must have made a home in there at one point:

All in all, I am much happier with this setup. Sure, it's a little more quiet than I'd prefer, however, it's much better than the crappy droning thing I cut out of there. This will hold me over until I can get the setup I want, probably next year. Looking at the Magnaflow catback - just unsure of what I'd want to do with the manifolds/headers and the cats/"y".

Wow and I thought the exhaust I just installed over the weekend was a hack job - I've never seen anyone do something like that for the muffler delete.

What are your opinions of the Mr Muffler on Hall Rd? I typically go to the one on Van Dyke south of 23 Mile Rd but I'm going to need some adjustments with the exhaust I just put on my car to center the tips. Did their weld job look decent?

      Brian -

No welding was done - they just cut the end of the exhaust square (same location as the muffler-less one I cut off). The guy had used a sawzall, and while it was a decent cut, it benefited from being sliced cleanly with a tubing cutter. I had them expand the 2.5" pipe to basically 2.75" so it'd slip right over the stock piping between the "y" and the axle. In theory, it should have been a quick slip-on-and-clamp exercise, but it was a bugger to get it on there enough to where I felt comfortable that it wouldn't leak and/or the joint separate. I'm still used to my Grand Prix days where the engine was the wrong way in the car -with a heavy foot, the entire exhaust would move forward/backward. I think the "right wheel drive" SS should be OK for the few months that I'll drive on it like this.

Anyway, to answer your question - I don't have a lot to go on to recommend or advise against them. Guys were friendly and did OK with what I asked them to do.

A little closer pic of the atrocity:

I noticed one point where there was an exhaust leak due to poor welding...but then I realized it didn't really matter as there was no muffler anyways. Who really cares, it sounds like poo no matter what, right?

I still have the original GM stock exhaust system for my SS that is in one piece. I even polished it to look like chrome. I will reinstall it when I sell the Brickyard and they will sell my GMMG Chambered exhaust system with optional mega phone stainless steel tips. That system I polished for over 10 hours before installing it and it still looks like chrome 9 years later.

            Wow, FrankenPipe!

You might consider getting your name in for that GMMG chambered exhaust...

You can consider me interested. Any plan on when the Brickyard will be going, Greg?
