The Michigan FBody Association is a centralized website for FBody enthusiasts to discuss what's going on in the Michigan area. What do you guys recommend for mufflers for an X-pipe? Shooting for something that won't get me pulled over constantly but with good tone. Going on a cammed LS1, longtubes, with a 3" x-pipe.
From what I see, Dynomax bullets are popular but seem like they would be really loud.
Bullets will be LOUD. Duals are a ***** if you want to use a normal muffler, unless you don't mind seeing the mufflers hang down from in back. Packaging issues aside, full-size Magnaflow/Dynomax mufflers sound great without being obnoxious. If you don't mind a chambered muffler, Flowmaster and Spintech offer lower-profile full-sized mufflers that are going to be a bit louder but still quieter than bullets. Some say the 4" round Magnapack mufflers are supposed to be a little quieter than bullets, but I really don't see how as they look like basically the same thing.

I've had my camaro next to plenty of cops with a "resonator" and no muffler. (Long tubes, TSP ORY, TSP Rumbler catback) Never had any problems. Just babied it while they were around.
Have a pair of flowmaster 44's sitting at home. Maybe I'll put them on in the spring and test them out. Not worried about seeing them hang down...current exhaust hangs really low.
I just installed Pypes exhaust my son purchased from Performance Years Pontiac Parts on Christmas Day. He got the Street Pro all stainless steel system including stainless steel 1" Pypes band clamps. Wow does it sound good with the small Melling cam ( same as the Summit 2801 cam) the stock 1975 low compression 400. Here are some pictures of the install and a video of what it sounds like.

I think if you are mindful with the gas pedal you should be fine with darn near anything.
thats funny because in the fall I was just driving thru town here with my cutout open driving normal not getting on it at all. As I am driving down the main drag in rush hour traffic I see this black car fly up behind me and I see its a cop, so I hit the switch on my E-cutout and he proceeds to follow me till the stop light. Keep in mind My car sounds pretty mild with the cutout closed, So were sitting at the light to go straight and he whips in the left turn lane and drives by me real slow staring at me while I stare at him back. I had a pretty good laugh out of it. . .
Anyway, OP I would suggest a magnaflow bullet or magnaflow makes some 4"x9" mufflers IIRC.

There is a difference between "hanging really low" and having to beat the rear seat buckets up 4 inches so they aren't resting on the ground at ride height...
