  • 2001 camaro v6 exhaust, reputable exhaust shop?

My cat died on my 2001 V6 Camaro 200 miles out of warrenty . I decided i would replace the exhaust from from the cat back since my muffler is rotten and i could upgrade the exhaust pipe size for a increase in power.

The stock system is a 3" in and 2.25" out cat with 2.25 to the muffler and tip.
I just bought a 3"in/out magnaflow high flow cat. I want to use 2.5" system to the muffler with a single exiting muffler with hidden tip like the stock setup.

I know you can buy 2.5" systems but they are all dual exhaust. I do not want dual exhaust and I already asked companies just to buy the intermediate pipes. I know you can buy 3" pipes from summit but I think I will loose too much low end torque because it is only a v6.

Do you know of any good exhaust shops that could do something that i am thinking of in the detroit area? Please state if they have a mandrel bender or not.

I took it to one place and they told me it would be $295.00 with an Xlerator muffler with 2.75 pipes. But again I think 2.75 is too large for my little 3.8.

sorry for the long post, I was trying to be specific

I believe the torque has more to do with the primary length and diameter. and you have manifolds likely so I wouldnt be worried about it. I dont think running a 3" I pipe would hurt your torque... if so then running a cutout on the YPipe or open headers would totally kill your motor.

The important stuff is all in the headers.. past the headers you want as little restriction as possible.

I don't want to do that for 3 reasons
        1. illegal, in the extremely rare case I sell it to the wrong person or get stoped by the wrong cop. $2,500 fine
        2. a v6 with out a cat sounds terrible.
        3. they don't rob that much power

Warranty on a Catalytic converter by FEDRAL LAW is 8yrs or 80,000 miles. As long as your under Both Remind the Dealer that those emission parts are under warranty by Fedral LAW. If you need a copy of the Fedral catalyist warranty i am sure i can find the articale and post the link.

Are you sure it didn't die before hand ? Mode 6 data will show when the catalysts became borderline for function. I would also call an Area Manager and Insist that is be replaced free of charge or start writing complaints to the EPA. that cat Failed before warranty and there is a known issue with the Calibration in the PCM being so lean it cuases Infant mortality with the Catalyst.

If youre still looking for an exhaust shop i would have to reccomend great lakes customs. I had them put a flowmaster on my old v6 camaro. They do really good work you can tell they are very experienced. All mandrel bent too. Its in mt clemens right off grosebeck on north rose. Send them an email see if they can do what you want.

                  Thanks Knuckles,

I went and dropped Greg a visit. He suggested I not mess with the stock system as I will loose torque from using a bigger exhaust size. I will be visiting him a couple of weeks for a new muffler because mine is rotten.

                  Thanks

Just to follow up on my experience at Great Lakes Customs....
I was very disssatisfied with his work. He did a good job putting the muffler in, but he said he would install a dynomax HEMI TURBO muffler. I knew the super turbo muffler from summit was $40.00, so I thought the hemi turbo would be priced higher plus mark up.

Well I was looking at the muffler the other day and right on the muffler says "Super turbo" I wrote him a e-mail saying "your lied about installing a hemi turbo muffler and I think $60.00+ mark up on a $40.00 item is outradges. I think $10-20(max) mark up is about right"

He wrote an e-mail back saying he never had a complaint....basically FU.
Greg charged me $100 for an item that cost him less then $40.00
and an additional $40.00 to install it which I thought was reasonable.

I will not be going back to Great Lakes Customs, and I am still insearch of a exhaust shop that can mandrely bend and exhaust system for my chevelle.
