  • $540 for header/ypipe labor?

I just wanted to see how much streetlegalcustoms would charge to install longtube/ypipe and they said its a 6 hour job, and im looking at a total of $540. Is it just me or does the price seem really high? I was thinking more along the lines of like $150-$200 for the install.

yea that seems quite high to me. A lot of shops try to avoid doing those because its such a pain to do and get clearanced properly, might be why they quoted you so high. I just did my install myself, but we have a shop, lift, tools etc.. If you don't have the tools to do it or know of anyone who does you might just have to bite the bullet, I'd definately shop around for comparisons though.

My friend owns a shop, and im more than welcome to do it there...And i would do it, but id rather just pay a little and have it done+have receipts to prove to future buyers that it was done right.

thats 90.00 per hour seems like going rate. I know I would not touch that job for that price doing it in garage with no lift. but that being said when its your own car its a labor of love

I might end up doing it myself, as i did with all my cars. Will doing headers/ypipe make a huge difference? What are the gains of this? Of course later on i will have a cb.

            $90/hour is the going rate?

            I wouldn't pay more than $75 in this economy...and target $50-60...

Do it yourself. Its a pretty straightforward install. heck I'd do it for half that easily, but I have a lift.

It's really not that hard, the hardest part is probably getting the old rusted manifolds/Y off, in which case an impact comes in handy.

They probably base the price off of the Mitchell flag hour system. They basically average the amount of time of install X hourly rate. Unfortunately, most jobs can be done in 1/3 the time quoted.

Most shops have been using that system for years. I know every body shop my Dad worked at used that system. The more experienced the person is doing the work, the less time it will take them to complete the job. That is why they use that system, so that as the person's ability to do the work faster improves, they are able to make more money due to the amount of work they are getting done. It pays to be efficient.

That said, I've never thought of taking my car to a shop that charges $90/hr for labor. I would rather have a friend with a lift help me out for a case of beer or something.

Speaking of which, I may be needing access to a lift sometime this year, if anyone is interested in helping me out, PM me. I'll buy the pizza and beer.
