  • Intake/Exhaust help...

So, my dreams were recently crushed when I was told by my parents that I cannot sell my v6 camaro and get a v8...now I am still itching for more horsepower, and I know for starters, I need to upgrade the intake and exhaust. The problem is that I do not know which to start with, how to find a good setup, and which brands would be the best for my performance and sound... I have a series II 3800 and I think I need to start with a cold air intake..does anyone even make an intake setup for the 3800? I think slp might...but anyways I need help to figure out which brand of exhaust to get...I have a magnaflow Hi-flow catalytic converter including the y pipes to the exhaust manifolds..and I'll get headers down the road, but which brand should I go with? I will tell you that I absolutely f-ing dispise the sound of anything ricey!!! I hate the sound of 4 cylinders. Ideally, I would love it to sound as close to a v8 as possible. Any help would be appreciated.
    -Thanks, Doug

The only way to make a V6 sound like a v8 is to record a v8 via and play it through your radio via CD or MP3.

    Intake
SLP makes a cold air kit for your 3.8 and andl many ebay cold air intakes are available as well.

    Exhaust
Your car should still have the crappy flowing log manifolds. (Later 3.8s had tubular manifolds) So you would see a diiference on upgrading to headers. I belive pacesetter makes and there are a few sets of LTs out there as well. But from Log manifolds to headers you should gain at least 15+ hp.

The 3.8s have an annoing rasp so I would encourage you to keep a stock flowing or SS take off mufler.

I would do a junkyard turbo set up, that would rock. Cause it dosent matter how crappy your exhaust sounds if your kicking their ass, lol. It just adds insult to injury. Eric L

well as for exhaust it depends on your goals with the car. There are shorty headers from a few different companies available as well as LTs from FFF. But if you are going to turbo it then you are going to want forward facing headers instead so then you minds wait for the turbo to go on to change the headers.

As for sound magnaflow makes a nice SS kit in either 2.5" and 3" depending on your future engine mods and goals

I went with pacesetter headers, full 3in, into a catback off a 1999 ss slp camaro.
It sounds pretty good, alot less rasp then the 2.25 into a hooker aero chamber that i used to have

man i remember that.. i was 17 and told my parents i wanted a camaro.. my dad asked "what kind of motor?" i told him a LT1 and he slammed the door on that idea!! so when i was 19 i told my dad well dad i just put 3000 down a 97 Trans Am... so i guess i really didnt give him the option to deny me! my advise as much as it sucks.. dont try to make a 6 cylinder fast, just save up like i did and you will have a BAD car in a few years... and your parents really cant say much, if anything they will respect you for saving your money for something..lol well thats just my opinion.. well at least what i did, and it worked!! good luck man! p.s sorry if this had nothing to do about your questions.

there are only 2 exhaust setups i would EVER consider for a V6. A factory Z28/SS catback:

              (heres mine):

              or true duals:

nothing against magnaflow but i think they sound like crap on a (stock) V6

On a cammed one they sound pretty good.

Hahah yeah. Well at idle theyre not bad. I know some one with a LM1 on a stock! 3800, it sounds like a tractor at wot.

I dont know where it would be, but i posted some vids of my car on here after I did the full 3in and ss catback, check them out if you want an idea of the sound.

Do your self a favor, if you get ss or magnaflow exhaust go to 3". then when you upgrage the 3.8 to 5.7 your exhaust will be done and ready.
Brians 3.4 sounded real good and we did cat back. But we didn't do 3" so now he has 5.7 with long tube headers and dump to 2.5".
Any thing you do now I would do with v8 up grade in mind.

based on the amount of work required and the amount of money I would have to put into it, swapping an ls1 into it seems out of the question...it seems like a really intimidating project. So I think I'll just work with what I have and eventually sell it and get a v8...but thanks for all of the advice...and another question, how would I do a catback setup from a z28 or ss??? does it have the same hangers and everything or what?

Depends, if it has dual outlets now, then yes, if not then no, its not hard to make a hanger.

After Xmas I might get my new exhaust installed and I'll be going from a stock V6 outlet to a hooker aero chamber with duals. The pipe from the cat all the way back is going to be stainless but I don't know the diameter yet but it's a custom setup by a guy my dad knows who can do it for like $150. Hope it all works well. Good luck
