  • leaky header gasket

well just when i thought i had enough misc bs to fix on my car, a header gasket sprung a leak on me today (im pretty sure). is it gonna hurt anything if i leave it like it is for a while? there is a very slight ticking at idle, and a slight hiss under throttle. probably something only i would hear until i pointed it out to others. I just dont feel like tearing a header off already

      fel-pro 1406.

i didnt think i was gonna have any problems, they sealed right off the bat and held up when i had it at the track last weekend. but i guess i didnt knock on wood.

I don't have headers on mine or anything, but from all the articles I've read and from guys around here they are saying factory exhaust manifold gaskets are actually better. I'm sure guys around here with header can tell you which one is better when you replace them. I always thought Fel Pro made pretty good stuff, strange

You can't use stock manifold gaskets.

One or more of your bolts has backed out, Joel. Reduced pressure tore the gasket. It's a near-100% occurance on every header install.

You need specific header bolts. It's like a bolt-within-a-bolt. There's a name, but you can do some searching. That's the only way to fix your problem. I'm going through the same thing.

It won't hurt anything, but your leak will get worse. Eventually it'll be a full-on exhaust leak and reek up your interior/clothing/brain.

I use stock manifold gaskets on my Hedmans. I used the kind they came with and they leaked like a mofo.

Put these on... no leaks since.

I dont have locking header bolts, just reduced head size so they take a 3/8" wrench. I have to tighten them every now and then, including the collector bolts.

Welcome to the world of headers, add another thing to your maintenance list.

i have slp headers and whatever gaskets they supplied with them.i believe they are steel could be wrong did them over 2 years ago and no problems.but i used breslins locking header bolts.pain in the ass to set but bad ass in my opinion.when u fix that leak you may want check into them.i payed 60 or 80 for the set but well worth the money.

i already have them. theyre breslin locker bolts, and trust me, i put them in tight. one of my drivers side bolts is a stud though, i couldnt fit a locker in there. ive tighted it a couple times since install. i havent determined which exhaust port the leak is at yet though.

Unless for some reason the LT1 is different you can certainly use stock gaskets. i picked up a new set from GM when i did my headers and have had zero problems. It definately is only going to get worse but you should be able to get by for a while.

Thats the only gaskets the I ever found that didn't leak. We always use stock manifold gaskets on the headers.

well i think i had some good luck again. i was just about to unlock the first header bolt when i ran my hand into that stupid air fitting. im like: hmmm, you look like a problem. so i took it out, cleaned the threads, straightened it out a bit, and put it back in. took it for a test drive and it seems fine!! i got it good and hot too on the test drive so i think that did the trick. bad news is, my spec clutch is feeling kind of crappy... it seems even more at the top of the pedal than normal.

I reused my stock ones on my install and no leaks, They were in great condition so i was happy about that.
