Ordered a set of DMH Weld-in Cutouts. Does anybody know...?

He does great work - I even took my oil pump to him asking if he was able to tack weld the press-fit pickup tube onto the oil pump so I don't have to worry about it slipping out while it's in the car. He said yeah no problem, did a couple spot welds, then handed it back. I asked how much I owed and he said nothing. Good guy.

well, a y-cutout is going to be significantly easier to install than these DMH weld-ins.

Well, the cutouts 'finally' arrived this week. Contacted Mr. Muffler on VD south of 21 mile and as it turns out, Jay no longer works there. At the time I couldn't recall the name of the other man mentioned in this post, (Stenod), but all the gal rattled off was a George and a couple other common names.

I may have another connection who 'should' have access to a plasma cutter and welds for a living. In case that falls through, do you guys have any other recommendations? Thanks.

Jay works at the Mr. Muffler south of 23 mile. I was just there a few weeks ago.

Joel stated that he 'thought' it was between 22 and 23 so when I looked up Mr. Muffler in the phone book, saw the one south of 21 on VD. . .I figured that had to be the one. Go figure there's another 2 miles away. Additionally, (and oddly enough), there was a 'Jay' that once worked at the one south of 21.

Well, the cutouts are finally installed and functioning. (No video as of yet.)

I've been somewhat hesitant to speak but, here's the facts.

I had the cutout flanges installed by Jay at Mr. Muffler. He had never performed an installation quite like this. (ARG!) But, I won't cut the man short, he will find a way to install anything...at least exhaust-wise.

To open the pipes a pneumatic cut-off wheel was utilized which was very barbaric to say the least. Over cutting on the first flange (drivers side) necessitated a lot of extra welding. Toward the end of the first flange welding process, I inquired..."is that stainless steel wire?" Nope. "Ah, just spray it with some 1500º paint and you'll be OK." Oops, my fault, I should have thought about that sooner (omg...humph).

The die grinder he was trying to use to true up the opening was totally inadequate and basically useless. I brought my own 1/4 hp grinder and carbide burrs which "I" eventually utilized. Yes, I did my own cleanup.

Additional care was taken in regards to cutting the hole for the second flange (i.e. a lot of additional material was left in the ID). During the welding of this flange an acquaintance of Jay's arrived looking for service. He finished welding and went to work on the other persons vehicle. WTF? Tired of waiting I again took my die grinder and began the major cleanup. Oh yeah, during this time their lunch arrived and they watched as I finished the job.

I'll recommend this shop for normal everyday exhaust repairs and replacement. Custom work? No way.

I hope to have a vid soon, it's dependent on weather. (Oh yeah, it's loud as hell!)

yikes, doesnt sound like a very professional job at all. I wouldn't want the owner breathing over my shoulder either, but it seems like he just flat out wasn't trying very hard to do a good job on yours.

Wow, wasn't expecting that with all the referrals that were given. Sounds like a pretty sketchy guy. Not using SS rod? wow...

Nothing like cut once, measure later, huh?

The good thing is it is under the car and NO ONE will ever see it. As long as the function and aren't hanging down, that's all that matters.

Wow, doesn't sound like he put forward much effort at all! It's hard to find a good shop/fabricator. And once you do it seems like the good employees always leave and your stuck looking for another shop!

I'm pretty surprised to hear about all that - Jay has done nothing but great work for me in the past. But, I'm happy to hear your truthful experience - I've never actually sat there and watched him do the work before, I always have just dropped the car off and picked it up when he was done.
