  • good shop to install headers

hey guys i just picked up some hooker long tubes for my 96 lt1 and was just wondering if anyone knew a good shop to get them installed in the troy or metro detroit area. Or if anyone in the area knows how to install them im willing to pay them and play the roll of an assistant during the install. haha but really any help would be great i just dont want to spend a crazy amount of money.

im sure someone on here will do it for a decent price. A shop would charge you a ton of money. I priced it out last fall and i went into shock.

yep what he said. Its really not too complicated just very very time consuming because of the things that have to be removed and clearanced to get the headers to tuck in there. That is why most shops either quote very high fees or say they don't even want to do it. Your best bet is to try and find someone that will help you install them, my brother and I did mine in our shop in one night. Luckily my car is from Georgia and hadn't been in rain at all. A rusty michigan car could make it quite a project.

Do it yourself. A shop will charge you up the ass. Me and my two buddies did it in about 3 hours. They had both done it before and I had not a clue what was going on. But once I went through it it wasn't really that complicated at all. The hardest part is taking off the old manifolds and exhaust. After that it's a breeze.

Either do it yourself and save lots of $$$ or call Stenod.

alright so it seems like a shop is a bad idea.. i havent had much experience as a DIY'er and headers seem like a pretty complicated install so if any of you knowledgeable and experienced people could volunteer an afternoon or night to help out i would obviously pay you not to mention be forever in your debt

Well i could help you, Im not working, and my grandma lives in troy shes only 3 miles away

install is easy, taking out rusty manifolds not so easy.

I built my POS from the ground up, Found it in warren in a backyard with plants growing in it, And blown motor, trans, and rear end.

I did shortys, I was a fool back then, never again, those were a pain in the ass. long tubes are lots simpler For starters i would start Lubing up the exhaust manifold bolts for a few days. im not sure how good that would work if you DD it.

I second the bolt lube . . . you do not want to break a manifold bolt. Other than that, floor jack, jackstands, simple hand tools. I found it easier to do the driver's side with the steering disconnected, and the passenger side from underneath, as far as installation tips go.

are doing long tubes easier from the top or the bottom?

you have to go from the bottom, they would never fit through the top.

FYI, you're going to need a new y-pipe.
