  • 99 z28, over axle exhaust pipe question

the current setup on my car from the previous owner causes the exhaust pipe to bang on either the axle or underbody of the car if the rear wheels slip/hop during acceleration. i have not measured it yet, but I believe it to be a 3" pipe. I am looking for a new setup that is quieter that comes off long tubes headers. any suggestions. i have seen some over the axle pipes that have been flattened for more clearance. does anyone know of any exhaust kits that do not cause the knocking sound to happen. thanks.

Are you talking about a Catback or True Duals ?

if its a catback get a aftermarket panhard rod, that and even a relocation bracket will open up world of room there while also improving performance.

not true dual. current flow: headers, exhuast pipe, loud mouth muffler, exhaust pipe back over the axle then splits for two outputs. let me see if i can get a picture up for everyone to look at.

If it's a catback then their shouldn't be too many issues esp. if it's only 3".
My Mufflex is 3.5" pipe from the y to the bumper and I needed to modify some of the hangers and mounts to eliminate vibrations particlularly the over the axle pipe.
Also make sure all your pipes are seated firmly and tight because if one starts to walk out it will cause vibrations.

Looks to me like you coud raise that hanger a little and gain some room.

the L bracket bolted on by the panhard looks bent. Bend it to a 90 or loosen the clap at the y pipe and slide the hole system back a little

The over the axel pipe on a factory SLP dual-dual is flat on the axel side for more clearance. only 3" one I know of like that
