it doesnt matter.. it'll just get to the point where it misfires if it gets too lean. I believe during a cruise they can hit up to 16:1

but 95% of the time your vehicle is operating it is running stoich.. 14.7:1 which is the highest temperature you will achieve because it is using all of the fuel and all of the air (as close as possible anyway)

Just remember.. Idle and full load are TOTALLY different scenario's

haha i know. Im going to be doing my own PCM tune, so Ive got more than a carb mixture screw to turn

Your timing is way too retarded causing the combustion to happen too late downstream.....happens alot to people who refuse to time an engine when they fire them up......ranks right up there with "guessing at setting valve lash".

spark plugs look like they are burning everything pretty well they look just like they should. now i have to put the powersteering pump on and time the engine and see what that does.
            thank you

Rich at idle would have some different symtoms...i.e. smokey exhaust or exhaust discharge.

And rich wouldn't contribute to glowing red exhaust manifolds after a minute at idle...you'd have to wait for the manifolds to heat up and begin combusting fuel in the manifolds themselves...

              I'm sticking with major problem...timing.

              Contributor...too lean at idle.

EDIT: This may also let the plugs show a normal burn...not for sure, but a possibility...

but anyhow, being too lean at idle wouldnt have these sypmtoms either, your EGT would actually be lower on the lean side of Stoich

on the timing...been there before my friend!!! I'd say 99% sure it's timing.

Running lean at idle without load is not hard on the engine. Light loads can be run rather lean (~15:1), the biggest sacrifice is drivability. I have my maps tuned for 15:1 during cruise for fuel economy. Might try and go leaner too!!

there is a little smoke comming out of the exhaust but not alot. i am trying to get everything done on the car but time is hard to come by but i will get that timing done as soon as i can and let you all know what happens.
