what do i do if my headmen hearder a getting cherry red. my engine is a sbc 305. we had the engine running for about 1 or 2 min and the passenger side lit right up and then the drivers side got red. should they do that with the engine only being a 305 and what should i do to make sure they dont burn everything under the hood or start a fire.
    thank you

sounds like a restriction in the exhaust mabey. you would have to be runing rediculasly lean to do that you would melt valves to be doing that while idleing i would expect.

it sounds like the carb is sucking air again but if you spray starter fluid all over the carb it never revs the engine. there is a dent in the exhasut but that shouldnt make that big of a difference and there is no cat on the car and the muffler is brand new. plus the exhaust sounds great when the engine is running and i want to get the car on the road and give it some gas to see what it sounds like. could it have something to do with the screws on the front of the carb.

Or a combination of timing and too lean.

This is NOT a good thing for only idling a couple of minutes.

              Something is seriously wrong.

you can pull a spark plug for a quick judgement of whether or not you are running dangerously lean.

running lean at idle will not hurt your car, nor will running lean under part load (this is done by OEM's in different parts of the world for fuel economy)

actually running stoich is the hottest you can get which is what all OEM's do untill they reach high load and add enrichment for cat over temp or to protect valves/exhaust manifolds

My guess is either Dangerously RICH or very retarded timing

right but what do they consider lean, like 13:1?? I agree lean is fine, but if the spark plug came out a crispy white, you are more than a 'little' lean. Pulling a plug would also tell you if it is too rich. It was just a suggestion for a quick check. I think timing is the most likely culprit.

well.. if its running rich.. he should having some itchy eyes from all the fuel pouring outta the exhaust.... maybe a slight buzz haha

                            13:1 is rich...

ha. you know thats what I initially thought, but i always forget which way it goes. I double checked with a search and i must have cited a ricer website because they had it backwards!

OK so 15.5:1 would be what i meant. I suppose air over fuel is obvious enough
