Oh I just realized I completely forgot my reasoning for replacing the heads.

My valve seals are going again (I had them replaced a year ago), and I would rather just replace the heads, and not worry about them stupid valve seals again.

I'm sure I can sell a pair of LB9 heads for like $75.

i used to own a 1990 RS camaro witha tbi 305. you want to sound good. cut out the cats.lol. make it sound like a whole new car. i was thinking my had flow masters or somthing. tillone day i looked under it and it had some cheap mufflers and no cat.

well the car sounds damm mean!!!

I would not realy pit money in a 305. what i think would be realy cool for you is a high mile lsx motor. you can pick up a lsx 150k 5.3L for $250-500 harness and all. bolt that bad boy in. and thats 290hp stock.

after you get use to the power. rebuild it with new rods, pistons , cam that. that would be sweet.

the best part is that you can un bolt a 5.3 and bolt up and lsx motor. they all have the same mounting points.

FYI 5.3L comes with a block good to run 9's . forged crank. stock long block good for 480rwhp. with piston and rod up grade over 900rwhp. Right now We own a 2002 1500 hd with a 6.0L vortec ( LS motor) with over 200,000 miles and it runs stroung. i mean i can get on it and it will get up and go.

Well, see, I can't do an engine swap here right now.

I need to buy a winter vehicle (looked at this '64 Corvair today for like $3k...), and my Camaro is my daily.

I can't have it be down for half a week putting a new engine in it. Heads would take a day or two, which means I can have it done on the weekends.

Yeah, that's also what I was thinking. It would be a shame.

Maybe I should just buy it for fun... One owner, 100k miles.

Sounds like your guides are pretty wore out if the seals are gone again after a year. You could probably get them redone with a 3 angle valve job, new guides & seals for under $100.

But since you are limited to a weekend that won't work.

A swap to an LS motor will take time and a lot of $$.

383 would be nice, but is it practical if this is your DD with gas prices?

Personally, the only new motor I'd trust for under $1000 is a stock rebuild from a reputable shop. Don't expect to get a reliable 3-400 hp for under $1000.

This is your DD, if you are not ready to put another motor in it I would wait. If you can get heads for a good price that have been redone with new guides, seals, locks, springs and seats I'd swap the heads. As for the cam, a cheaper alternative that while isn't quite as good as a cam but might help would be going to a higher ratio rocker arm when you swap the heads. Should be 1.5:1 right now (and stamped I'm sure). If you went to a 1.6:1 ratio full roller rocker you'd pick up a little lift and duration as well as free up some friction in the valvetrain. Between that and the better heads, should wake that thing up some.

I agree with Joel too, get a better intake no matter what you do.

Yeah, my mechanic told me that they were toast, when he did my valve seals (umbrellas).

I think L98 heads (aluminum, preferred) would be my best bet.

Anyone know someone who can port the lower and upper intake? I don't want to buy a high-flow base, and I'm not quite ready to ditch TPI.

On that not, anyone have a set of high-flow runners they'd like to donate?
