  • Custom 3.8l CAI I made

Well I was bored today and made myself a CAI for my camaro. I previously had the stock airbox with some holes drilled in the bottom for more are in the car along with a drop in K&N filter. The new setup has 3" pipe with a cone filter on the end.

This has such a great sound, I can hear it sucking in the car and it is pretty sweet. It was about time I got rid of all that restrictive airbox crap anyways. I was thinking about going into the wheel well like a SLP or K&N setup but decided against it because it would be just another bend for air to slow down through. Instead I am going to build a sheetmetal box to enclose it from the engine bay like a grand prix setup.

Now just got to wait till spring and see if my 1/4 times improve from it.

well $20 for the 90* rubber elbow and $25 for the filter. Pipe was free from my dads exhaust shop , so a total of about $50 after the clamps and junk. $50 is much better than $150-200 for the aftermarket stuff.

yea but with sheetmetal, I will be able to keep the engine bay heat away from it. Just need to pick some sheetmetal up. My filter is lower down too almost sitting in the hole by the wheel well.

what is wrong with yours anyways?

i think it looks good so far, and i know once the sheetmetal is in place, it will be a lot better than that restrictive stock intake....

your still going to need to coat the sheet metal with something to keep the heat out it would take a while but it will still absord heat into the metal without a good heat coating, maybe just make a cardboard box and then cover it with some fiberglass bondo... quick and cheep.. and when your done you can sand it down really nice paint it to match the engine bay for a clean look... still just moving it that far from the engine and giving it that much more of a filter... you will notice a differance

ya that would work great thats a very clean setup but you can still see the mean filter i like that... plexi glass isnt to expensive eaither... if you want some i have 8x8 foot sheets of it at work..lol i hack a piece off whenever i need it... that with a little plastic weld you would have a nice looking setup

One more reason I like having an LS1 car and the FRA mod. Anyway, nice work, good job coming up with your own setup. Is there anyway you can get more cool air from the bottom of the car in there?

what I could do to get more cool air is to make a ram air scoop under the car. Cut that black plastic in the fender well and attach a scoop to force air into that cubby hole. That would put the air right by the filter above. Also at the moment I left the plastic piping from the stock airbox in so there is air blowing through the headlights right onto the filter.

I think there is plenty of cool air on it, and once I make a box for it, it should stay nice and cool.
