  • 1st Time Tune up?

I had the old idiot light come on in my bird today. Turns out its a PO301 Cylinder #1 misfire. I figure since I am now at like 99,500 on the clock its time to tune her up. So I've been doing research into performance ignition parts. Here is what I am thinking...

MSD Ignition Wires from GVVS - $61
NGK Spark Plugs from Advance Auto - $42 $7/EA
PCV Valve from Auto Zone - $3
Fuel Filter from Auto Zone - $7
PowerFlo Air Filter from Sears - $5 (Free)

Any other site sponsors carry this stuff?

Anybody ever hear of this brand?

Should I have to replace the O2 Sensor?

What do you think, any suggestions? Any better prices?

    Thanks guys!

if you have access to a scanner you could look at your o2 sensor readings. if they seem lazy or unresponsive, you could replace them. otherwise, i wouldnt.

i dont know much about the v6 motors and what spark plugs they like. but personally, i hate mail ordering spark plugs. i want to be able to get them from a parts store near me. but then again, i replace them a lot... so maybe that doesnt apply here.

did you replace your belt recently?

have you done fluid changes (diff, trans, coolant, brake fluid, etc) recently? if not, you might want to add some of those to your list.

Ben, I'm guessing you will notice a HUGE difference in how your engine runs after doing the tune up. I say this to you and anyone else that may not know any better. Just because they say you can go 100k miles before tuning up doesn't mean you should. I personally change my plugs at least every 25k miles. It's just good maintenence and with the cost of gas it will save you $$ and the plugs and wires will pay for themselves.

If it were me, I'd go through and replace all your fluids like bmw said.

I've had the coolant flushed earlier this year.

I've never changed the brake or trans fluid. Are those hard to do?

I will have the diff. fluid changed when I go to swap in the new rear axle. It looks like its got a bad seal anyway, so I'll have the whole axle gone over before I install it.

I guess I will check into the Bosch platinum 4 plugs from Auto Zone since you suggest getting them locally. But I still want the MSD wires from travis.

I'll ahve to find a scanner. Is that different from a code scanner?

            Ben. . .

I have the scanner that has been mentioned, I apparently haven't given you the tutorial of what it's capable of. . .

As far the plugs, STAY AWAY FROM THE BOSCH PLATINUM +4's! They SUCK!! A nice set of NGK Iridiums will do you just fine, and they are about 1/3 the price. As for the wires, use ACDelco, GM used the right wires when they made the car originally. I would suggest the switch to Synthetic oil since you haven't done that yet either. We didn't flush the coolant this year, it was early-mid summer of last year. You should bring the car over so I can give it a quick once-over before you go blowing any money on parts or services you may or may not need. Cap and rotor should be switched as well. It's not really a good idea to order tune-up parts from the internet, I think that probably 95% of all of the car enthusiasts I have ever met will actually buy the parts that you wouldn't expect them to buy. Take a look at the Monte Carlo, for example. All of the tune-up parts for that came from AutoZone. Just know what you need and what to stay away from, and I'll help you get the right stuff.

true, but one man's sbc v8 engine swap is another man's tune up

why would he have to bleed the brake system if there is no air in the hose, or dust that got into the cylinder?..Is that necessary to do just for a tune-up?

make sure when doing the spark plugs you get some of the anti-seize for the threads and for the boots of the wires.

didnt see that on your list
