  • 1998 z28 dancing oil pressure gauges or waving gauge

My oil pressure gauge I've noticed it's bouncing when it gets to the 30 psi Mark on the gauge.. Anyone else have this issue?

1998 camaro z28 5.3l swap (currently being built) stock other then HV, HP ported ls6 oil pump, ls6 intake, and lightly worked heads. And I mean very lightly. Oh and has a k&n open filter cold air intake.

Has a new opsu still does it, this is a new motor also, first start my oil pressure was 60psi cold, then second start was 50psi cold then since then it's been 40psi cold, and bouncing from 25 to 35 ish psi. The car idles great, sounds great, no ticking no problems yet.. but a little concerned about this gauge

My 98 has always been rock solid 60 cold, 40 hot at idle. I built the 6.0 that's in it.

Make sure you didn't pinch or cut the o-ring on the pickup tube. You could always put a mechanical gauge on it to verify the gauge in the instrument panel.

I'm thinking that's what I did, because I took the car out for a drive today and when I returned I noticed the oil pressure was creeping down and hitting zero, and when revved it wasn't picking up hardly any pressure, but if I shut the car down and restarted it I got 40psi of pressure, then if I let it idle again it would drop pressure again.

I do remember when I installed the o ring (I used the black one) I had to use a good amount of force to get it in the pump almost as if it was too tight of a fit.... so I'm willing to put money on I tore the o ring, I checked the oil and it's clean, no shavings.... so I'm looking at an o ring change, what do you think?

Sounds like it could be sucking air. Use a little petroleum jelly when installing them, I never dry fit the pickup tube.

I used new motor oil to try and slip it in, I used the black o ring instead of the green one, but online they list the red one as the correct ring. I want to get this done right right way the first time. No one likes doing the same job three or four times. I'm glad it's just a o ring and not something worse.
