OK I think most of us can agree that VATS sux for a variety of reasons! I understand it was implemented in the F-bodys in mid 1988 or so. I got my 88 in hard luck shape, with no keys. I can get one cut from the vin, but the dealership cant tell from the vin if it had VATS, or what value key is needed from the vin......... How can I tell if my 88 firebird has it or not without the key?

Look for two small white wires coming out of the steering column, typically within an orange sheath. Since 88 was an odd year (for VATS and engine harness) I'm not 100% sure on this.
Since you don't know, and GM doesn't know, it's probably easiest just to get a chip/prom with VATS disabled. New ignition lock cylinder and key then not worry about it.

Yeah, that's is my plan "B". This car is so hacked anyway..... 350 TPI motor is cool, but missing mass air sensor, intake stuff, distributor, CPU module, etc, etc, makes this an uphill battle. Missing interior is of no real concern as its going to be restored to is glory as a screen used KITT.... but still.... Gotta wonder why the previous owner started stripping it..... did it go into a lake?sigpicI AM THE PROTOTYPE OF THE CAR OF THE FUTURE, NOT SOME INFERIOR PRODUCTION LINE MODEL
