  • '92 Vette Problems

    Hello,

So last summer I had just bought a '92 Corvette. It drove fine from Troy up to where I live, about two hours away. The only problem I knew it had was that there was a short causing the security system to flash up on the dash. I had driven it about 3 times and on the 4th time the car shut off while I was driving. I was able to park it and then restart it and drive it home. When I went to drive it a 5th time, the car drove for a good 10 minutes and then all of a sudden the car shut off and I could smell something electrical getting really hot. The car would start for a little while but it wouldn't idle, it would misfire and then it would shut right back off. I was able to get it moved back to my house and have not been able to start it since. The last day I drove it, it was 100+ degrees outside. SO is the problem my opti-spark or did my my computer burn up, both? Or could it be something completely different? Also, is there a good place to get that short in my dash fixed? Electrical is something I absolutely know nothing about.

No it just popped up on the dash from time-to-time. It wasn't on when my car quit running.

Check you door plungers for the sec light. They come loose and make the light flicker. The other problem sounds alot like the opti took a shit,

Oh yeah, SRS was also flashing on the dash as well.

Does your car happen to have an aftermarket radio?

Yes it does. I've heard about that popping up with the aftermarket radio, but it only showed up occasionally after I've driven the car awhile. If the radio was the culprit would it not be flashing the entire from when I turn the car on?

I've never dealt with it personally, so I can't answer on the frequency of the flashing, but I've heard it is intermittent on some, and constant on others. I'll do a little research and get back to you.

Alright, thanks. I'm gonna replace the opti-spark here when it gets warmer, and see if it will run after that. I just don't want my car to catch on fire if it is a short in the wiring.

I have a known good used one, You are welcome to try it before dropping cash for a new one, just for testing.

Prior to joining this site, I bought the parts to replace the opti, I just had never got around to finishing the job. The compactness of engine compartment of the corvette is so demoralizing. I still thought maybe that short may have fried my computer as well or something.
