Had an AC Delco in my Trans Am. It honestly looked original. 130K miles and 9 years old when I sold it. Not 1 single charge or jump.

Have a Meijer brand battery in my Z28 currently. PO bought it the day he bought the car in January 08. I've never had to charge or jump it. The car has sat for months at a time and has always started.

Duralast gold batteries from AZ are nice. Optimas are trash for the most part. Interstates are nice as well.

I've been running a regular interstate battery in the malibu since 07' has sat every winter for over four months, never had a tender, just unhook it, reattach the positive and negative in the spring and she fires right up. I'm (sadly) coming up on a year in storage for the car so I'm interested to see if the battery has held up without a tender. Still an impressive battery non the less

The sad thing is that Optima batteries really aren't bad batteries. They get a bad rap from people who try to "color coordinate" with their car, not realizing that there is a difference between the Red Top, Blue Top and Yellow Top batteries.

Red Top=Starting Battery. People complain when it won't hold a charge. It's not meant to be running everything and charging all the time, it's meant to start the car, and that's it.

Yellow Top=Deep Cycle Battery. Best for street cars with full electronics, these charge better under everyday conditions in a street car, although if it's a DD, you should really be looking into a wet cell battery. Dry cell/gel cell batteries are intended for safety in case of an accident, as battery acid isnt added to the equation in a rollover accident at the track.

Blue Top=Deep Cycle Marine Battery. Meant for boats. Self explanatory.


If you drive your car on the street more than 60% of the time, you need a traditional wet cell battery. I've had good luck with ACDelco batteries, bad luck with Duralast and Exide batteries, although the warranty replaced both when they failed multiple times.

I've had zero problems with Meijer bought batteries. I'm a Meijer employee so I get 10% off, but they have never failed me in the last 12 years

The beauty of the store-bought car batteries these days is that while they may be cheaper (both in quality and cost), they usually have pretty generous warranty periods, so if something does happen, you usually wind up with a free (or pro-rated) battery to replace it with. I've replaced the battery in my 93 once a year for 3 years now, because something about being stored outside over winter with just a battery tender to keep it company tends to kill batteries. . . Warranty still going for another year or so.

i like duralast or interestate. ive had occasionally luck with miejer brand. i could turn my truck over for a long time when it wouldnt run and the battery wouldnt die. it got low but once it started charging it held its charge just fine.

If money is no object, look at the new lithium-ion. extreme light weight with a 10 year+ life cycle. I thought I heard they only weigh about 10lbs.
