  • looking to install a remote start

Ok I am looking for good brands that people have had good luck with..

I found a viper with the options I want, but would rather ask you guys cause alot of you have done them or have them..

I lost my keys and my only remote opener so I want to replace it with a remote start for this winter cause I have no garage, but it HAS to have ability to open the truck as well..

    thanks in advance

Its not a bad job as long as you get wiring instructions for your car. You do know you can't do remote start on a stick without special kit.

I've installed them before, and am in the process of installing one on my truck.

Depending on the vehicle, Bulldog makes T-harnesses so you don't have to cut into your factory wiring.
Some splicing will be required into the Body Control Module and the Ignition Wires for things like Dome light output, headlight output, horn, door lock/unlock, and defroster enable.
Viper, Clifford, and a few others are all made by DEI. Generally these are good brands.

I can provide you with the diagrams if need be.
It's not a 5 minute job if you've never done one.
You have to make sure your Ignition wires are connected well, tach Output, brake signal etc are critical connections.
Otherwise you can have starter grind, or other electrical issues while driving down the road.

You'll also need a Passlock bypass module. If it's for your Buick and you have the old resistor key, you have to wire the passlock module into the VATS connections.
If it does not have a resistor key - you have Passlock II which requires a different module, but same concept - wire it into the VATS circuit.
              Example: http://www.google.com/products/catal...ed=0CGwQ8wIwBw#

Trunk release is no big deal. Most modules will have an Aux output that you simply wire a Relay to. Usually the output from the PCM is a negative trigger, but you should add a relay just for safety. There's not enough current handling available built into the starter module.

              Professional Shops:
If you Have Dukes Car Stereo do it...be VERY cautious. They charge full price for the alarms, and then tack on $50. for each option. $50 for defroster... another $50 for trunk... Serious Rip off.
Check installation places and when you get the quote, make sure that all of your options are active and included.
Ask them if they solder their connections or wire loop. The "Industry standard" is to cut the insulation back, Loop the wires through the harness, and tape it up - for ease of transferring to another vehicle.
If you plan on selling it with the vehicle or keeping it till the wheels fall off, I'd recommend asking they solder the connections.

              Hope that helps you out.

Anything by DEI is good. They're all variants of each other. Agreed on soldering the connectors, or better yet using high quality crimp connectors with the proper tool and then solder/heatshrink for corrosion resistance/good measure. Make sure you find a meticulous installer. A lot of people just throw together a remote start install IMO. Then again I'm anal about wiring.

I have a VIPER and it's awesome. I had Automotive Specialty Accessories in Plainwell install it and the only problems I've had, they have taken care of for me. The only problem I had was when the parking lights kept blowing the light fuse in the starter, but I've learned to live without them haha
