  • Need help! in a bad situation!!! ignition lock cylinder

    Hey guys,

this is my problem.. in my 85 blazer.. my g/f just lost the keys to it.. we are pretty sure a plow truck pushed them into a pile of snow.. at her school.. it was my only ignition key... a lock smith is over a hundred bucks to get a key made.. its sitting in a school parking lot.. we dont want it sitting during winter break in the spot its in.. it might get towed... since i dont have a key to put it in nuetral or to turn the steering wheel.. i dont think AAA will tow it...

the lock cylinder is old and is pretty warn out.. the key was so bad that i couldnt get a copy made that worked in it... i was planning on switching it out anyways.. but heres my question.. can i replace the ignition lock cylinder now that I dont have a key? and how difficult would it be?

    thanks guys, anyhelp is appreciated

Is it original? If so you might be able to take the VIN to a dealership and have a key made. Although I am not sure if their databases will go back that far or not. Worth a phone call tho.

they kept codes till 92 atleast lol. i was gonna have them make a copy for my camaro just incase since i only have one key but they wanted a pretty penny for it so i took it out. you could swap out the ign cylinder im pretty sure i did on my old k5 blazer 88 and it worked fine. Good Luck man

the very first thing I did was call the dealership, they only keep records back to 1990, its an 85, so I'm out of luck there.

I went up to her school and looked around, and inside the blazer to see if I could maybe find them, in case she was just over looking them, no luck there, I also had a handful of old gm keys that i figured id give a try.. no luck there.. the only concern i have right now is, am I going to hafta break a bunch of stuff to get the cylinder out because I don't have the key in it? or since its old enough will the cylinder just pop out without the key?

I don't want to drive 45 minutes up there, to get working on this thing, to find out i need to drill out the cylinder or something and not have a drill with me, or something stupid like that... has anyone replaced their lock cylinder in their pre 1990's gm vehicles?

I have never replaced a lock cylinder on something that old. But I did on my old 1993 S10 when I lost the keys to that. It just popped out and I put a new one in, a little more rigged then I made it sound tho. My truck was a real POS so everything was kinda rigged in it. But I did hotwire the truck to be able to drive and move it when I lost the keys. Do you know how to hot wire or know anyone that could do that?

ok, here is an update everyone.. in case you were wondering...

I drove up to her school with my dad.. he has AAA.. we got up there and called them.. we told them the car needed to be moved ASAP and they told us that we had to call a locksmith first, and they would cover the first $100 to have keys made.. we called around.. and nobody could come out until the next day.. so we called AAA back and told them that.. so they sent out a tow truck..

mind you.. the steering wheel was locked.. and the wheels were slightly turned.. we didn't have a key so we weren't sure how they were gonna tow us.. this guy comes out.. and sees the wheels cocked.. and pulls out a thing of keys... they weren't really keys.. but something metal that is shaped like gm keys.. that he played with in the ignition.. and got it to unlock... he started the blazer up for us..

haha.. we asked him if we could buy the key off of him, he told us that he wasn't gonna make any money unless he tows us.. since the mileage has to be turned into AAA for him to make any money... so he sold us the key.. as long as he could claim on his thing that he towed us there in back.. even tho he didn't.. so he got 2 hours worth of pay for him to probably go home and watch tv... all in all.. i got a key.. well sort of.. but it will be enough to remove the lock cylinder.. so we are in good shape.. thanks everyone.
