  • Engine braking and DFCO

DFCO (Decel Fuel Cutoff) I'm wondering if we can actually get better gas mileage while engine braking rather than letting the car come to an idle and using the brakes. Well, in MT cars anyhow...and in the range of DFCO in your tune. (I'm talking about tuning, thus why it's in ignition/electrical).

Since I have DFCO pretty much maximized in every gear except neutral, wouldn't it just cut off fuel completely under decelerative conditions?

And, are there any benefits to engine braking, such as cooling of the combustion chambers?

I do it cause it sounds cool

Well actually since I've adjusted the dfco settings it won't pop because there's no fuel. Still sounds cool though.

I read somewhere that above like 1500 rpm with 0% tps there is zero fuel being introduced to the engine. So what you have to figure out is if the blip in throttle to rev match uses more fuel than an engine idling.

exactly, because engine braking without rev matching is pretty unintelligent. so you also need to be decent at heel-toeing.

I would predict that fuel consumption would remain approximately the same because of rev matching, but where you would save cost is in the wear on your brakes. makes it worth it IMO.

Raw fuel out the pipes is where it's at.

Maybe if I had a different OS and it cut spark instead of fuel

I usually see fuel mileage decreases when I drop it into gear, but yeah, it sounds sweet.

I've been told that a lot of the popping is actually from the scavenging effect, so it's pulling shit out of the combustion chamber.
