I was going to get another duralast gold, but for 40 bucks more I can get a red top.

I went through 2 red tops with my sonoma in less than 3 years. The same Duralast (std., not gold) in my car Explorer with no issues.

Oh, sorry. I didn't even put the timeframe in. That standard duralast has been going since 2005 without any issues. I just wish it wasn't red. When I pop the hood to check the fluids it looks like Christmas. Hell, the factory Motorcraft only lasted just about 3 years.

I was just reading reviews. I'll be getting another Duralast.. No way am I getting another yellowtop..
OPTIMA RedTop™ batteries are designed for short term high current applications such as starting engines, and short high amp uses of a winch motor. They do not like to be "deep cycled" (like ALL automotive starter batteries) however the Red Top battery with its SpiralCell Lead Plate Technology, will suffer much less from the occasional deep discharge such as leaving your lights on or winching until the battery dies. Because of the fact that SpiralCell technology can store more energy for a given sized battery these types of battery are ideal for use in offroad vehicles where reduced weight is important because a much larger "conventional" battery would need to be used in place of an OPTIMA to give the same starting current capability.
They are not specifically designed as "deep-cycle" batteries, for constant deep discharge/recharge cycles you will need to look at the YellowTop Optima batteries.

This sounds like my yellow top..
                  Worst Battery EVER!
I purchased this battery for my G35 coupe. I have used it for 2 months to replace the OEM battery. OEM battery lasted 4 years, but opitma Red Top is having trouble turning on after only 2 months. The cells cannot hold a charge and the battery sounds weak when I lock the car doors. WORST EVER! Do not recommend!

Original Red Tops are a very nice battery...don't know what's happened to their quality....sucks.

FWIW...deep cycle batteries should not be used in a standard car application. Deep cycle bateries are designed to be fully charged then run extremely low before they are recharged...like in drag cars without an alternator or fishing boats
