  • Alarm System Reviews/Opinions

First off, for the purposes of safeguarding information regarding any of your alarm setups, I request that, if you participate, you please PM me the information about the alarm setup you are reviewing. To share this information with others who may be interested, I will then proofread and post up any reviews without any link to the people that sent the reviews. . .

DO NOT POST REVIEWS IN THIS THREAD! PM THEM TO ME!

I'm doing this mostly because I'm looking to install an alarm system (rather, have one installed) in my Formula, and I'd like to see what kind of systems have worked for you guys, and what you thought of the features your particular alarm has, as well as any other alarms you may have looked into and what made you choose the model you went with. Also, I want to create a source for F-Body specific concerns that are overcome by certain alarms, as well as a list of alarms that work well with our cars. I haven't seen a good compilation of this kind of information yet, and security is a concern in some of our vehicles, since they have been around for a while, and the technology that came from the factory that was once "State-of-the-Art" is now outdated and (somewhat) easily defeated.

Now, I know that an alarm alone will not guarantee that my car will not be stolen, which is exactly why I'm not only going with an alarm, but another anti-theft system that is proven to work. I would, however, like to install an alarm to prevent the contents of my vehicle from being stolen, as well as to get a few more features that my current system doesn't have.

Here are the features I'd like to hear opinions on:
1: Piezo Sirens-I've heard these are very effective at deterring criminals from stealing contents of vehicles.
2: Incline Sensors-Seems like a good idea, but I'm not sure how they work exactly, or how effective they are.
3: Motion Sensors-All of these I've seen have been WAY too sensitive, and became a nuisance after a while.
5: Starter Kill-Although a decent thief could bypass this, it seems like a good barrier to prevent someone from driving off in my car.
6: 2-Way Remotes-Again, seems like a great idea, but how well do they work? Are they glitchy, or have they been perfected?

I'm not looking to make my car un-stealable, since that's practically impossible. . . However, I'd like a decent thief to have a hell of a time making off with my car. I've got a couple of tricks up my sleeve, and between that and a decent alarm system, I think I should be able to accomplish this quite well.

Again, DO NOT post up your vehicle anti-theft system details publicly, I don't want any of you possibly becoming victim to car theft, and you never know who's watching the site waiting for someone to put out that kind of information to make their jobs easier. Please include prices, model numbers, what type of vehicle it's installed in (be vague. i.e. "LT1 4th Gen", "LS1 4th Gen", "3rd Gen", etc.) and about when you had it installed, as well as benefits/drawbacks to your specific setup.

Hopefully I get some decent reviews, and I can make this thread a sticky.

In have a basic Viper alarm that has served my okay. I had the motion sensor installed and they went off every time the wind blew or a cat or squirrel walked by. My land lord was not happy to say the least. But the guy that put in the system did not seem as competent as I would have hoped. Next time I will go to an actual stereo shop.

As far as brands are concerned, it would appear that they are all the same and for good reason. Most alarms are made by the same company (Directed Electronics). This includes brands such as Viper, Python, and more.

I think the next system I will get will have a two - way. That way I can look at fob and verify indeed that my car is locked and if someone does try to mess with my car, (God help them) I will know exactly where what sensor they tripped.

I think you might consider a combination for the best results Nick, EMCC Randy may still have some of the ones that he sells even though he is no longer a distributor.

Yeah, I know what you have, I'm looking at getting a system like what you want to get, just looking for some opinions. As far as the "other" option, I've got a couple standing by until I get back. . . I'm looking at multiple levels of security in my car. Nobody's gonna steal my ****.

I have a viper also. But have the 2-way remote. Love it...really wouldnt want another brand. Viper in Yoshi..and had a viper in my 89. The motion sensor kind of suck though, but really depends on how high/low you put the sensitivity. I can control that with my 2 way.

Great Idea Nick, I want to get an alarm as well. I hate the fact that everyone and their mother has power locks, windows, and an alarm on their cars except for me

I'm interested in what you come up with as well. My 92 had an alarm but I had to rip the ground off the siren because my battery died in my remote and it was going off. I definitely want one in my Formula though.

That's one of the things I'm going to avoid. I found a siren that has a built-in battery back-up, and cannot be shut off by any method other than using the siren remote or a key in the back of the siren itself. It prevents anyone who is trying to steal the car from being able to kill the siren by killing the alarm. I'll be getting a 2-way system, just trying to decide what brand. I'm looking at a Viper right now, but if it's true that most of the major brands are made by Directed, I'll go straight to the source. I can't stand companies that overprice an item with their label on it when they don't even make the product.

Do these really work on fbodies?
If someone sticks a coat hanger between the window and car, will the alarm go off?

Do people even pay attention to alarms?

If they involve a direct electrical connection to the body, or a trunk monkey, probably.

Alot of people don't pay attention to an alarm, at least I don't too often. But since I park my car in the driveway and not in the garage, as soon as I hear it go off I'll be right there. Or when I'm out in public more than likely someone will look over at it. I want to find a distinct alarm that not as many people have that is plenty loud.

I also have an Idea about putting a contact switch in the floor so I would have to step on it while turning the ignition to be able to start it. I don't know how hard it would be to do but I would still like to look into it
