  • Need some help, starter issues???

The problem I am having is that the car will not stay running. This is with my 95 3800 Camaro. It will start no problem and stay running if you hold the starter all the way forward but once you let the key go, it dies. Also, the gauge lights do not come on when you turn the key forward to the on position like they usually should. Before the car went dead completely, while driving, the speedo and tach would go all over the place and it would want to stall out randomly.

I have already checked the battery, its good. Check the terminals, main lines from the battery and all the grounds. I did find a broken ground but even after fixing that, the problem did not change. Checked all the fuses, relays, took apart the underside of dash and do not see any loose or broken wires running along the steering column. Alternator is fine, running around 14.1. Thinking maybe something in the starter?

I got the steering wheel off and am slowing working my way to the starter from the inside of the steering column but could use some insight on what the hell could be causing my car to not stay running unless the starter is held manually all the way forward??? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Steve

Steve, get a manuel with wiring diagram for your car, a hayes from auto zone will work. Reason your car runs while holding key to start is because of run circuit not being completed when you lest go of key. KISS! Keep It Simple Stupid. First choice is ignition switch. easy to check pull kick panel under steering wheel. You can get to wires, take a volt meter, check to see if you have +12 on the run you know you have it on the start contact. follow circuit from there. Would not suspect or consider the starter. Engine turns over. Also the manuel will tell you how to remove ignition switch.

      ignition switch
its not behind the steering wheel
its all the way at the bottom of the steering column on top. remove the knee bolster and you will find it

ok thanks a million guys, ill get on that. I hate electrical issues, they just arent my alley of interest. I meant to say ignition in my post, not starter, but It was early when I wrote it and was thinking the starter was the ignition in my head....

from the iginition switch is a yellow wire. it goes to 2 places. 1. to the theft deterent relay operatimg strap. out of that is purple to start solenoid. 2. it goes to trans selector through park and neutral out is brown wire to pick theft deterent relay.
best place to look is shbox.com wiring diags. the security and ignition is all the same on the 3.8 or the lt1, the PCM controls the rest and thats where the difference between the v6 and v8 are.
