My distributor(well i think) my distributor has gone. the cars not sparking, so my plan is to replace the coil and the distributor (the wires and plugs are new. plugs are brand new, wires have about 3000 on em) so the coil and distributor are next, barring any unforeseen problems. so i was wondering if anybody had recommendations/warnings on what set up to use. id love to go msd but it totals out around 750 with the cap and rotor, and while i love the car i cant imagine that an msd is truely that much better then say an accel. any thoughts, and suggestions are greatly appreciated. THANKS

Go AC Delco, I've never heard good enough reviews of the MSD stuff to warrant the higher price.- Brian Meissen

Where are getting a price of 750 for the MSD? Its 499.99 from me, includes cap and rotor. I have sold a ton of these this year without anyone contacting me with a problem. But nobody that I know of has these in stock now, they are on national back-order without a ETA from MSD.Originally posted by Rome View Postid love to go msd but it totals out around 750 with the cap and rotor, and while i love the car i cant imagine that an msd is truely that much better then say an accel. any thoughts, and suggestions are greatly appreciated. The only other one I have in stock is a Accel unit, 269.99

yeah i dont know where i got that price i saw it in one of my performance catalogs i guess(JEGS, SUMMIT, CLASSIC INDUSTRIES ECKLERS). i dont know i see that it is 499 with the cap and rotor. and 40-43 for the coil. csmith4153 what do you recommend for a coil. and have you heard enough abotu the MSD to warrant the price. and meissen where did you find an ac delco the only ac delco ive found is jsut the cap and rotor.

All of the "performance" coils are within a few bucks of each other. But I have like all of the MSD stuff I have used in my personal cars.Originally posted by Rome View Postyeah i dont know where i got that price i saw it in one of my performance catalogs i guess(JEGS, SUMMIT, CLASSIC INDUSTRIES ECKLERS). i dont know i see that it is 499 with the cap and rotor. and 40-43 for the coil. csmith4153 what do you recommend for a coil. and have you heard enough abotu the MSD to warrant the price. and meissen where did you find an ac delco the only ac delco ive found is jsut the cap and rotor.http://www.fquick.com/csmith4153

ill probably jsut swap the opti. since its summer now, if the opti went in the fall id probably do the ls1 swap since i cant drive the car in the winter. but since i only have time to work on the car after work i would rather not take on such a big, long project right now.Originally posted by formula57 View PostI no longer have an opti. I use a ls1 pcm with a cam sensor in place of the opti. All parts total cost around 900 or so. But alot of time and labor. Not to mention u need a good dyno tune afterwards.
im probably jsut gunna put in the distributor and coil for now maybe the ignition box later. now i jsut want my car back. and i might not even get the msd opti jsut because of time. ive only found it online, and it wont ship for 4+ weeks.and that is most of my summer and i would liek to have the car for the summerOriginally posted by csmith4153 View PostAll of the "performance" coils are within a few bucks of each other. Yea, the MSD are on back-order, no one has them in stock. I wouldnt trust that 4 week to be in stock either. The last I heard is the MSD cant even tell us when they will have more.
I do have the Accel in stock

yeah thats what i figured. but its all good for right now, bc a buddy of mine had a new coil that he bought for a 350 and never used it. he said to swap the coil(hes a mechanic). we swapped the coil and strong start. so i'm gunna leave the opti alone for now. hopefully until november then ill have a lil extra cash and a ton of time to play with the f***er lol. it still doesnt start tho, so im going to my fuel system over the weekend, since i have spark and air i need fuel to run so that must be my problem. if anybody has suggestions on a pump or fuel injectors, i might need thos next. so thanks for the help on the ignition stuff guys. ill take it all into consideration in the winter when im diggin into her

You also run over 7000 RPM and that's not advisable either.Originally posted by PWND3r View PostI wouldn't waste your time on an MSD. I've blown 2 in two seasons. My MSD will be up for sale in a week or so.
I have a MSD cap and rotor along with the 383 I just built for Old Fart on this board and never had a problem.
We both have MSD coils and I have a MSD 6AL ignition and have had no problems with and of the products from MSD.
AC Delcos have standard contacts on the inside where as MSD (not sure about the others) have brass/copper contacts as well as the rotor that will last longer and conduct better spark.
There are 2 ways you can do the ignition on our cars:
1. go with an LS1 pcm and a trigger system
2. go with a LTCC system that keeps the optical sensor in the opti for signal and gives you the LS coils.
Both of these systems ar with in a 100 of so of each other for price.Last edited by Phantom409; June 26th, 2009, 08:45 AM.
