  • BCM Problem Please help!

    Hi guys,

This is actually for my sister. She drives a 2000 Grand Am and has been struggling with these issues for some time and I know she has dumped her fair share of $$$ into the car to fix it with no avail. I know this is an fbody forum but I know there are some 3400 buffs around here who might know something to help. Please help!

"Thanks for trying to research and gather info regarding my car issue. Here's a quick synopsis of what's been going on...

Last October, the GM dealership poked and prodded around and finally decided the BCM (Body Control Module) had gone bad. It was replaced and the problem went away for 8 months. Then the other night I started driving my car and some of the dashboard lights came on (Security, Service Engine Soon, Seat Belt). These were same lights that were coming on and off all last summer before the BCM was replaced. The car seemed to run ok and my local mechanics were not available, so I went ahead and drove it to get outfitted with new tires. Once I drove the car out of the shop, I noticed some additional dash lights were on (ABS and Brakes). I stopped the car and tried to restart it. Then, after trying to restart it 4-5 times unsuccessfully I ran back to the tire shop and got a guy to come help me. He started and revved the engine hard 4-5 times and it finally kicked on. I drove the car to the dealership and they started giving me their same lame story about diagosis fees, etc and I decided to take my car somewhere else. I was recommended to go to a shop with sophisticated computer readers and the guy came up with the following error codes:

U1000 Loss of Class 2 Communication
U1064 Loss BCM/VTD/DIM/PZM/OR SBM (different kinds of modules)
P1626 Anti Theft System Fuel Enable Circuit
    P2960 Passlock Communication

That mechanic believes the first three codes and his testing that resulted in failed communication with the BCM point to a bad BCM. The last code and fuel cutoff I was experiencing points toward a Passlock problem. (FYI, Passlock is a security/theft deterent device meant to cut off fuel if the car believes an unknown key is being used in the ignition.) Currently, I have the car waiting over the weekend at the mechanics for work to proceed next week. If you hear of any other stories about Grand Am/Pontiac owners with similiar problems, I'd appreciate the info."

    Thanks guys!

take it back to the place you had the bcm put in. Could be a bad connection at the bcm or it could have goon bad again. its all possible

We had a simular problem with B's Jimmy. Go to start it wont start, wait 5-10 min go out starts right up, runs fine for 2-3 months then repeats the cycle. I got rid of the Jimmy, but new owner had same issue and I believe it was security Module. But could also be a loose grd. Does she have both keys, when it fails try different key.

sounds just like a BCM and at the dealer we replace them often, they are common on those body cars. but since its been replaced 6 months ago there is a spot on the harness about 7-9 inches down the path from the BCM connector that I've seen rub on a bracket and slightly wear thru the wires. resulting in an intermittent problem. Trace that path of the harness and look VERY closely for any signs of chaffing or scrapping on the harness tubing.

Also on a positive note, I remember reading on Camaros and I would think it can apply to the rest of GM's fleet, somewhere in 98+ they took the VATS and integrated it with the BCM so when the security system is bonking out as well as the BCM... it's still just the BCM.
