  • Also need help with a dead F-Body!!

The other day I went to the gas station and my car started fine when I left home... When I got back to my car from paying for said gasoline my car wouldnt start..... Just a click. A quick one person push start and I was on my way back home. The next day I came out and tried to do an uninformed diagnosis, heres what I came up with. The battery reads 12.2v the alternator reads 14.4v, big wire going to the starter sits at 12.2v and the little wire spiked at .37v when we hit the ignition..... The horn doesnt work except when the car is running, but the car will start off the battery booster. We thought maybe the battery was lacking so I went a bought a brand new battery, got home tonight and put it in with the same problem, I can hear the fuel pump start all the gauges except for the check engine light and the check gauges lights go off when I have the key forward but theres just a click... Any help for the noob........... Ive read some of the other threads but didnt see any for a 93-97. Mine is a '95 Z28. Thanks Guys!!

One click makes it sound like the starter isn't engaging fully?

If you are reading 12.2 volts on big wire at the starter when someone turns the key, then your circuits are good sounds to me like starter.

Yeah, starter solenoid might be going bad. Sounds like adding the battery booster is giving it just enough Oomph to get it going. Throw a new one on and get back on the road!

Sounds like a bad ground. Check that your connection at the block is not dirty or corroded. . Also check the body grounds.

Could also be a broken wire on the starter it's self or the coil went on it.

Id check the relay, then the grounds, and finally the starter(doubtful its the starter).

Smack the starter with a hammer or something then try starting the car. Hitting the starter first will help the brushes and the car may start. I would try anything with the parts you have now rather than throwing money at parts you dont need.

Don't hit the starter too hard with a hammer, you could break the magnets in it.

KISS, Check all your grounds. Do you have ANY power when it does this, or does the dome light go out momentarily as well? Sounds like a ground problem to me. Eric L

Okay, I just went out side to see what I lose when I try to start it and it started right up. I turned it off and it started right up again!! So at this point I have no clue what is going on. A little more info is when its running and I accelerate or when I rev it, the needle for the voltage drops. VERY annoying while driving at night with bright lights as dim as my dim lights....... Could this have anything to do with any of my problems??? Im pretty frustrated at this point, Ive had this car for going on 3 years with regular maintenance and now I have problems just weeks before M&G.....
