Electric Water Pumps

Saw this discussion on LS1Tech and thought it was interesting enough.

Anyone here running electric water pumps? I keep going back and forth with the idea. The biggest plus is if the electric water pump fails it's not spewing all over your optispark.

I really wanna buy a meziere and would have no doubts running one if the price wasn't $550 I say go for it!

meziere makes really great pumps I recommend them to all of my customer's, especially for the lt1 to get the strain off the camshaft.

my old lt1 went 400 miles every weekend, after that I took the pump off and put it on a customers impala that is still running that same pump.

Those water pumps seem to be really hit or miss. Some last quite a while, some don't. I would guess that it depends on the type of driving you do. For you B, I wouldn't recommend it cause you are in the city alot. Also, while the water pump not weeping is good for your opti, it can be bad for you. You won't notice if its starting to die. If you aren't paying attention that shit will got hot REAL quick.

Hence the dummy LED. If the water pump fails the LED lights up.

It's definitely hit or miss on performance (cooling wise). Since the mechanical water pump's flow is dependent on RPMs, at cruising speed it's going to out flow an EWP. But idling, an EWP is outflowing a mechanical wp. So far, it seems like if you just combine an EWP with a manual switch for your fans you're OK.

Electricals are sweet because they do flow more at idle, and you can switch it on and off whenever you like depending on how you wire it, but the cons are that they are very touch and go reliability wise and at higher rpms the mechanical wins. But i have heard of some very high end water pumps that have crazy flow, but i don't even want to think how much those are.

I own a CSR pump and have under 2,000 miles on it. I noticed that the car runs much cooler, but I also removed the A/C system so it could just be getting better air flow.

I also installed the painless relay kit. I got a wiring diagram online and installed warning LED's to warn of a faulty ground, bad relay, or no power. They are handy but I realized the LED's are only practical when you initially start the car. Its a pain to check the LED's every few seconds. I check my temp gauge with out even thinking about it.

This summer I'm going to install a buzzer along with the LED. In reality you shouldn't need either, but its so easy to wire up why not do it? I don't know much about wiring. A trip to radio shack, and its just like putting together a simple puzzle.

I'd say install one if you have the cash, a soldering Iron, and feel comfortable with it.

I have thought about if for my car but the price vs. power gained just hasn't proven it worthwhile for me yet. We will see maybe down the road I will explore it more

I have an electric water pump and i love it.

I went with the CSR because it has good reviews and it also uses the least ammount of amperage, and also has the highest efficiency of gpm/amps. I recommend the CSR for street cars for this reason, but the Mezeire HD is the way to go for drag cars. (never use an EWP for autocross).

Honestly Brian i gotta disagree with you on the necessity of the safety LED. Its completely pointless. First of all, its only going to light up if the pump actually stops - it wont light up when the pump is about to fail and not flowing enough, which could still overheat the engine.

If you own an LT1 you should be monitoring your temp gauges at all times anyway. Unlike most cars, they arent very good at maintaining a constant coolant temperature. If I see my water temp climbing abnormally, I know there is a problem. Not worth all the grief of installing an LED. I dont understand why people freak out about EWPs failing, stock water pumps fail all the time too

My car runs cooler in traffic with the CSR, but warmer on the highway. I think it is a worthwhile mod.
