  • LT1 Problems

My buddy from work has a 94 Z with a built motor, hotcam, mids and full exhaust ect. Anyways he was having issues with the car running right before winter and had figured out that his MAF was bad so he bought one from a scrap yard cleaned it off and slapped it in. BINGO! the car ran like a champ and all was well. Last week he said he was driving it around and all on the sudden the car sputtered and then died he started it again and it died once more. So he unplugged the MAF and was able to get it running enough to limp home. Now he has no ides what may be wrong, I mentioned the opti but hes replaced it 3 times and now has the MSD unit so it shouldn't be that. Any suggestions? Joel we need ya buddy

its possible anything in particular that could be damaging the MAF to make it go bad? I'm not very knowledgable on my LT1 stuff.

yea using too much filter oil can do it, i cant think of anything else but water... which would be a bigger problem though. it wouldnt make sense that it was anything but a maf issue if he unplugged it and it ran

have you scanned it for codes yet?

I don't think he has but I believe he said no codes were thrown. I'll have to ask him about the filter I know its a K&N and I though of too much oil myself so we'll see. I'll have him clean the MAF again and also dry out his filter like crazy.

              Ok update:

I talked to him and he said the oil from the K&N made his last MAF go bad and he had oil in his intake elbow as well so obiviously way too much. He cleaned out the intake again yesterday and the MAF but found neither to have any oil on them and after reassembly nothing was better. Any other idess guys?

Yep starts and runs well enough to get it around. Could oil have been not evident on the MAF and still ruined it? Does it ruin it to the point of no return or is it cleanable?

if the wire burns its done. A stock car should run pretty good with the maf unplugged

any way to tell if the wire burned or not, I'm guessing it didn't look like it. Also I find it weird that it throws no codes at all.

get some carb cleaner and spray your maf off... reallly good that's what i did i had problems with mine my engine would shake, barely run... felt like it wanted to stall out... so i cleaned the maf off with some carb cleaner and havent had a problem since then..so i'm still investigating wheather or not if that was my problem other then that car runs fine

yea im pretty sure it works a lot like a fuse.... too bad its not as "disposable" as a fuse though.

its works like a light bulb. The wire is energized and heats up. The incoming air cools the wire

Well he said there was no evidence of oil at all so maybe it could be a fuse? I still say MAF because its similar to what he just had and replacing it worked but who knows.
