  • Low and high headlights on at the same time

Does anyone know how to wire or is there a kit available to have the low beams stay on when you flip on the high beams? I bought a kit like this for my truck from Stylintrucks but they don't offer one for a fourth gen Camaro...

    Thanks!

It shouldn't be too hard. I think I could do it with one 20amp relay.
If you're fairly decent at splicing wires, I could do a diagram for you.

How much do those kits cost?

I have it done to my car, all i had to do was splice into a wire and ground it. I cant remember what wire, though i did it a while ago.

found some data (quoting someone else):

There are 4 screws under the driver's side dash allow access under the steering column (2 philips, 2 hex). Then there are 2 plastic push pins that hold the rear panel in place, these can be removed by gently prying with a screwdriver. With these panels off, look down the left side of the steering column and there is a white switch with a brown plug and 2 black tabs. Squeeze black tabs and pull the connector off. Make a jumper connection between the large tan wire and the large yellow wire. For safety I used an inline fuse housing with a 30amp fuse, and spliced into the wires using standard wire splice connectors. After installing the fused jumper, reconnect the plug and reinstall the panels

This way if the fuse blows the lights go back to the standard operation instead of blowing the whole headlight fuse. The inline fuse housings are available at most auto parts stores or Wal-Mart. Again this is not required, I just did it for added safety.

for what its worth, the mod i did was in the engine bay and i just grounded a wire (no safety fuse). ive had it this way for a few years and its never blown on me but then again its not like i use my high beams very often.

Would this mod make that much difference with a 93-97 4th Gen Firebird, that only has one combination bulb in a sealed unit?

I guess part of the question i am asking is, is this mod just so that all four bulbs light up at the same time on high or is it so that you have light shinning at a high angle and a low angle at the same time?

yes; it's just to have both on when you hit the "brights" for better night vision

Ok, so it does improve night vision and it is not just for the sake of the appearance of all 4 bulbs being lit at the same time.

I may have to try this out too.

Here's a single relay diagram that should do it safely. Don't forget a fuse on the battery (+) wire. The relay should be rated at least 20amps and the fuse no more than 15amps. This assumes that there is a single wire that splits going to each pair of bulbs (or filiments). This would work for four bulb and two bulb headlight systems.

The only thing I'd be worried about is the heat from both lights being on in the same housing for any length of time.

We saw a Camaro that had that setup here in Florida when we landed and were driving to our condo from the airport. I don't quite think they "customized" the car to do that, though, because it was quite beat up and dirty. Who knows though.
