  • Did you get a boot/top cover when you bought your car?

    Just curious...

I've been helping to keep an eye out for any convertible top boots/covers for joedashredder and his 4th Gen vert, but I was lucky with my car. Even though it had been abused, mostly from simple neglect, it still had the boot and bag in the (filth-infested) trunk.

How many of you other vert owners out there bought your cars and found that the boot was not included?

Why would people keep these things and not sell them along with the car?

Granted mine was 5 years old when I bought her used, mine didn't have it either. I found out from the car-fax that she was originally a company car so where the boot would have ended up is anybody's guess.

You know what I'm finding most fascinating about this? It's the number of people who keep the d*mn boots, but don't throw them away when they find them later. And when they do re-discover them, they try to sell them for big $$$ on eBay and craigslist rather than offer them to the guys who bought their cars and who should have received them in the first place !

People are greedy when they hear the dealer is selling them for over $800, I sent a reply to the guy in Chicago I really wish this works out.

Here's the latest pricing on the boot covers:

            Tonneau cover, Center, CVR-F/TOP
            List Price : $623.56
            Your Price : $498.88

            Tonneau cover, Outer Left
            List Price : $78.42
            Your Price : $62.74

            Tonneau cover, Outer Right
            List Price : $78.42
            Your Price : $62.74

So they list for about $800 without the bag. The bag itself has a List Price of $410.76 and retails for $328.61

            YIKES! 8-O

Sure -- they had to pay someone to design that whole abortion, including the overly fancy latching mechanism that barely works, then they had to pay for the custom tooling to make them, then they had to pay for small production runs, and SPO (Service Parts Ops) has to pay to box them and store them.

Plus, they know that they have you by the cojones because no one is ever going to come out with an aftermarket replacement.

Someone needs to start reproducing them.

Problem is, in today's economic environment, the only way you could even hope to turn a profit is to use crap Chinese tooling and produce it in China with near-slave labor and crap materials that contain lead, melamine, and rat dung. That is, unless you could locate the priginal GM tooling and export it to China or Thailand or Vietnam. But I just don't think there's enough volume/demand for this part yet.

Damn, I am feeling pretty good that mine came with a boot and bag. Gotta admit, the car really looks a lot nicer with the boot on.

my 1995 z didn't come with the boot but I found one on ebay, think I gave $300 for it. My guess is when they sell the car they do not include the boot and sell it separate for extra $$
