I considered it briefly. 383 parts are more common and the increase in cubes just isn't that much.

I barely researched it to be honest, but was looking at getting the scat 4340 complete rotating assembly.

The SCAT rods seem well regarded (the 6" pro comps with 7/16 hardware). The forged crank seems like overkill unless you've got some power adder plans.

No plans for power-adders really. Just want to be able to rev it and not worry about stressing anything. My spare engine had a spun bearing so im assuming the stock crank is junk.... may as well go big with the replacement.

I went with I beams, they seemed to have superior clearance and reviews.

                SCAT 9000 cast 3.75 crank
                SCAT 6" pro comp I beams w/ 7/16 hardware
Mahle forged flat tops with 5cc valve reliefs

Trying to keep the revs down and the cam milder, I do a lot of city driving and want to DD it.

Interesting and noted. i was going purely from an article i read waiting at an airport: http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/eng...-a-396-gen-ii/

I'd suggest an AI 230/238 would probably be perfect for your goals. Im running the baby brother 226/234 in my 350 now and couldnt be happier with it. torque peaks by 2400 rpm and carries all the way to redline.

I had a lengthy talk with lloyd Elliot and settled on the 234/242 on 110lsa. That'll help keep the dynamic CR down and keep in mind the cam acts a bit smaller on the bigger engine.

Ill also most likely be running 24x 411 ecu

thats going to run very well. probably all the same driving characteristics as my 350, just more power.

I also have the 24x / 411 stuff sitting on the shelf for whenever i decide to get my ass in gear on this project.

You want to sell that 24x stuff?

Yeah I'm torn between OBD1 swap, Jet DST on the 96 ecu or 24x

Ive had great luck with OBD1. But I truly believe luck is a key word in that statement, id go with 24x in a heartbeat if the funding is there.

Also if you dont mind im curious what he quotes you, ive got a spare block in the garage im thinking about building.
These prices assume he's just building the shortblock and I've already torn the block down:

                                $600 block labor
clean, remove freeze plugs, magnaflux, check line bore
bore, hone, deck, install cam bearings & freeze plugs
                                +$50 for tq plate hone

                                $150 stroker clearance

                                $250 to balance rotating assy

$500 to assemble short block, includes ring filing & cam degree
