Removing Paint and Rust

I am looking for a sander to strip an entire truck of paint and surface rust?
Any recommendations?
DA? Palm Sander?
Hook and loop setup?

Paper #s?

When I start to paint I plan on getting a DevilBiss Plus.

I dont need a Sata.

Now its a good idea obviously to have 3 different guns, 1 primer, 1 base coat, 1 clear coat.

A cheap harbor freight should be able to throw down primer but what should I use for clear?

A plus gun is a great gun for clear. Are you using a solid color or a metallic? If metallic get a gti. It's a great gun, old but works great and you can find them decently priced.

As for sandpaper it really depends on how many coats are on it and if it's had any body work done previously. I wouldn't go much less than 80. Then 150 and you can prime over that.

You'll wanna get both. Da for stripping it and a palm sander for later prepping. Invest in some good blocks if you have any body work that needs to be done. Usually you can get a set of 7 durablocks for around $70. You might want to invest in a sandblaster as well.

A 300 dollar gun to just shoot clear?

I don't know what I'm going to shoot. Metallic is like a modern car paint job that's metal flake looking but no where near the size correct? Solid would be no shiny specs but glossy when cleared right?

Alright any recommendations on good DAs and palm sanders? If I can get them in person I'll have 600 to spend.

I was just reading for good corrosion protection spray a expoy primer then shoot urethane 2k on top and sand that down, then hit the base coat.

Is this correct?

I used a harbor freight palm sander a long time. Just get some ear plugs. If you don't plan on using the da and palm sander for more than this project just stick with the cheap brands. IR is a good brand. Personally I'm using a matco for my everyday use. It's smooth and it's quiet. Oh and it was $280.

Paint strippers are nasty. But they work great.

If you're using a solid color (yes none of the sparkly stuff) you can use your plus gun for that as well. I don't like using my clear gun for anything but clear. But again, it'll save you money. Just clean it really well and you'll be fine.

After your 2 primer is sanded you want to seal the panels. Sealer is basically thin primer. It takes care of any scratches you missed, as well as if you sanded through any areas to bare metal it acts as a corrosion protection as well. Then you spray your base. Sealer to basecoat is wet on wet. You don't sand the sealer before spraying base.

Yes I understand why people like to use a dedicated clear gun, in case you're spraying and a chunk of paint flies out into your clear.

I do plan on shooting solid colors. Gray and black.

So you're saying shoot 2k primer, sand it, shoot sealer, let it flash, then shoot base coat, sand, base coat, sand clear coat, sand, clear, sand, clear, sand.

No need to sand your basecoat. Let the base flash after 2 good coats if it looks covered. Put a 3rd on if needed. Then 3 coats of clear. Don't slam your first coat on. Let each coat of clear have about 15 minutes to tack up then put the next one on. Putting 3 coats of clear on will give you plenty to wetsand and rub aterwards.

Also, after your first coat of base is good and dry, You can de-nib any dirt with 1200. Make sure you use a tack rag between each coat.

Have to think of cost as well. I know it's not cheap to have a complete vehicle sandblasted.
