  • Methods/tools for checking belt alignment?

I have a custom accessory bracket on my LT1 that relocates the alternator and deletes the A/C. It keeps eating belts fairly quickly and I can't tell why. Just by eyeballing it nothing looks particularly out of the ordinary. It's a serpentine setup with a solid tensioner. First time it did it it just ate away one of the outside ribs. I then replaced it and things were fine for about 20-30 miles. The other day I checked the belt before leaving, looked great, then after 10 miles of driving it destroyed itself leaving me stranded.

I'm willing to consider that the belt is too tight, however if I install it to the tightness I feel appropriate, the belt will chirp/squeal with the slightest blip of the throttle. I tightened it more to get rid of that, it seemed a little on the tight side, yet the belt still chirped a time or two then it went away.

Are there any good methods/tools to check the pulley/belt alignment?

Some of the tool companys sell a laser that will mount on a pulley and show how it lines up. I dont know who but Ive seen some techs use them in the past
