  • chirping noise when cold!?!

Just broke out the Camaro yesterday for the first time. It's doing the same thing it was doing when I parked it last winter. On initial start-up, with the engine cold, it makes a harsh chirping sound any time I hit the throttle. And it does this until it gets warm, then goes away. The speed of the chirping stays consistent with the RPM. SO.. this has to be a bearing somewhere right? I've tried to figure out where it's coming from but i just cant pinpoint it. It's a 96Z btw. Has anyone had this problem? I just want to make sure it's not something internal, which i'm quite confident it is not. Maybe the alternator bearing or A/C delete pulley or something. I'm gonna try to get a vid right after i hit post and see if I can get a better perspective for you guys. But anyway, wahtdya think?

Take a good look at the alternator and serpentine belt. Doesn't sound like a motor noise. Maybe power steering pump?
When in doubt, Whip it out !

My first guess would be alt. Pull the belt and give it a spin by hand.

cool, I was thinking the same thing originally. If it is the alt., do I have to replace the whole thing? I'll check it tonight and see what's up with it.

First thing I would do is take the serpentine belt off that separates engine from assessories. then go from there. Note water pump is driven from cam so you don't have to worry about running hot.

Tensioner SHOULD be good, put a new belt on last summer and it was fine, but we'll see. I'm gonna take the belt off and fire it up, that will rule out the alternator instantly. Hopefully the noise goes away after that, just don't want it to be internal.
