  • Dyno Tune vs Street Tune?

Looking to ditch this mail order tune and I see Baker Engineering does street tunes starting @ $250, while there dyno tunes start at $500. Is the Dyno Tune worth that extra $250 or will a street tune net around the same results?

I hear a lot of great things about Baker and my friend had his 06 GTO w/ mild heads and cam tuned there and it runs incredible, put down 430whp. Plus baker is only about an hour and 45 min from me.

no reason to put it on a dyno unless you want the numbers IMO. If they have a safe spot to test WOT then street tune is always the better scenario. Where do you spend your time with the car? The street.

right on. I guess I will make a call to Baker and get it street tuned this spring. Thanks!

I am a FIRM believer that a proper street tune is superior to a dyno tune but im not about to get into an arguement about it here. Im too lazy to defend myself

I like both. and both are necessary. Getting fine drivability on a street tune is much better than on a dyno. I use both street and dyno, and track tuning via data logger. Dyno is good for wot pulls as sometimes it's hard to get a good stretch of real estate sometimes for a street tune. But M59 at 3am has always worked well for me Nothing like putting it up on the brake/2 step to make a pass in the middle of the night!

track is a better tuning tool then either as far as making reliable power and collecting proper data. A dyno can't incorporate all the factors the car is exposed to running down the strip and the street is obviously the best for drivability tuning.

If you need to record 150+ pulls to record good data, i might advise a bit differently

X2 always had a street tune done, the tuner can work on drive ability a lot more on the street vs the dyno, you cant put in to affect issues like power steering and alternator strain in to affect on the dyno.

I agree that a street tune is better in most cases but you really need a dyno to properly tune spark timing. The best / safest timing occurs at max torque (based on cylinder pressure vs. crank angle) and you need a dyno to measure torque. Some people advance timing on the street until it knocks and then back it off a few degrees but this is NOT the best method. Others tune timing based on mph at the track but you still dont know your torque across all rpm's and therefore do not know that your timing is optimized...you only know that you made more or less power under the curve.

Not sure if my explanation makes sense but you really should be tuned on the dyno and street for the best results. Personally I don't like spending money on dyno time so I run very conservative timing and give up some power in return.

BTW...I had TJ (Baker Eng) tune my car a few years ago and the "dyno tune" included a street tune for driveability. Call and speak directly to TJ b/c I'm pretty sure he charged less than the advertised price...

He quoted me less the other day. I'm hoping to schedule a time with him next week.

I will definitely give him a call, going to wait another month so I can get my exhaust all finished but I do plan on a tune from them whether its a street or dyno.

Don't wait too long. Spring is a very busy time for tuners and they normally have a long waiting list. Even if you're not ready when you call you can get on the waiting list or schedule a day that works best for you...not one when he can "fit you in"

alright this is extremely appealing to me, I'm going to be needing a tune bad this spring/summer. Where is this Bakers located??
