  • What all needs to be done to a 1996 camaro z28 6 speed to handle 500hp (at crank)

I am trying to start a build list. I am thinking like 500hp (at crank). I want quality parts that will last a long time, but I don't want to spend a fortune. I really don't want forced induction, but I wouldn't totally count out a supercharger. Definitely NO nitrous!!!! I am currently thinking a 383 heavily built, but not sure if this can get me up to 500 (high 400's wouldn't upset me).

My main worry is what else needs to be done to the car to handle and put the power to the ground...

I am in no hurry and I don't have a set budget I am just trying to find out what is needed, what to worry about, and great advice on what other people did.

500 crank is easily doable with a built 383. I am making in the 425 range with just a cam. I wouldnt expect it to be cheap though. Youll need heads for sure.

Also you will need a good clutch and a rear end if you plan on adding any traction, otherwise the 10 bolt is fine.

call Advanced induction im sure they can get you into the 400s with a head/cam combo then freshen up the bottom end with arp hardware and bearings. white spring mod for the oil pump and weld the pickup tube on. or get the jegs bracket.

Anything that the car might need to handle all the added power, and increase durability.

clutch and if you plan on putting anything besides all seasons your gonna need to ditch the ten bolt but unless your one of the "lotto" winners online who catch them cheap its gonna cost $1800+ for a 9, s60 or 12 bolt. and id only say a 12bolt if you plan on road or auto x. if u want to build it for the 1/4 they cant stand the sudden slam like the 9 or s60

i have 9k into my car right now, including buying it. makes 542 to the wheels. i have about another 2-2.5k in getting my car to hook now. it handles better then any of my other camaros around corners, but doesnt accelerate, just spins. i have an ls1 tho and forced induction. why are you against it?

I am not really against it... I do really like super chargers, but I just don't want it on this car. I more or less wanted to see what I could get out of her naturally aspirated.
You said you put 2-2.5k in getting your car to hook.......what all did you have to do.

i havent yet.. read this thing, its what i have to do to hook. i learned its not just tires and a rear end, its LCA's (lower control arms), torque arm, drive shaft etc.

                          Auto or manual?

There is no number where they break. Some people just get lucky, some don't.
