  • 10 bolt enough?

I was wondering if a ten bolt would be enough for my application
    6 speed
cc ultra pro mag 1.6 roller rockers
    trickflow chromoly 5/16 pushrods
    trickflow guideplates
Cam (custom grind somwhat like a 306) hasnt been determined yet
    patriot dual springs
    motive 3.90s
    Nitto 315 drag radials
    100 wet shot
    Stock cubes maybe .030 over.
I was thinking about saving up for a s60 but the motor has been draining all of my money. so that could take a few months.
Just started ordering the parts and the setup will be swapped into my bird so if i should just save up for the rear end before everything gets switched over i can do my best to be patient lol. Any tips or advice requarding my plans or the rear end would be appreciated.

There is no answer to this question.

Some guys break them stock. Some idiots paint them pink and stick them behind a 454 (For the record, no I dont plan on it lasting long.)

If you can afford to get one now, I would say do it for sure. insurance... but if you are uber broke like some people save for it, and in the meantime dont try to break it.

The very first thing you listed - 6speed. Its much more likely to break because manual transmissions have more shock to the driveline. With a set of Nittos you might be ok.. no one can tell you if it will truly survive or not.

Keep the launches soft, and don't drill the shit out of 2nd gear and you'll keep it alive. A guy I know has had his car cammed with nittos for 5 years now and hasn't broke it yet because he doesn't drive like an idiot. It is starting on its way out though

It might live it might not. There is no way to tell.

Nittos arent exactly the best hooking tire. That being said I still wouldn't be doing 5K sidesteps with it.

Drive it till you break it and you will break it.

All depends how you drive it. First time you wheel hop it out of the hole at the track it will get noisy and then it all goes down hill from there.

i had a h/c/i lt1 last year on a 10 bolt with new ring and pinion and diff cover, and it lasted 6 passes with mickeys launching it a 4k.. i couldnt believe it.. but it exploded on the 7th pass when i tried to add a 100 shot to it... so like everyone says just dont be stupid.. i had a 8.8 waiting to go in so it didn't bother me.

agreed. you could have 800 horse or 250... it all depends how to drive it and also how well the gears were lashed from the factory. If its been gear swapped - i wouldnt even try. Mine has been taking a violent flogging from a spec clutch and 370rwhp for a few years. The only mercy I have shown it is that haven't put sticky tires on it. Other than that ive given it pure hell. My buddy jon is putting 500 to the wheels with a 10 bolt but its probably a ticking time bomb.

High RPM wide-throttle launches will get you --- be they stationary or rolling. So will violent engine-brake downshifts... so dont do that.

As stated, just take it easy with launches and shifts. Pedal it a little and roll into WOT. I am still on the 10 bolt with a 6spd but my street tires are my saving grace. They are my fuse. I'd rather break a tire loose than grenade the rear. You'll be fine as long as you don't do anything stupid or too harsh.

im still on my 10 bolt but with richmond 4.10's, im even more worried now that i put the new clutch in since the last clutch was so worn and slipped.
