  • Random stupid Autozone sales person questions...

I figured I'd post these just to see if the fine people at Autozone are really as stupid as I think they are.

    1. The engine HAS to be warm to test the compression in the cylinders

    2. The LT1 will not run with copper spark plugs - they need at least double platinum

    3. A clogged catalitic converter will keep the car from starting.

Theres more but we'll start with these - true or false?

I work at autozone. lol but i would say false on all thoes. And when it comes to double platnum, iridium, copper etc, I just tell them (like if its a lt1) it CAME with double platinums, but you can put what ever you want in there, this is america. lol

OK, but what if the car won't start... how do you do a compression test then?

never get these at autozone as much as i do from advanced auto. The guys here in midland think their word is god. Like when i bought NGK TR55 plugs for the camaro, they basically treated me like a dumbass cause i didnt go with OEM delco.

yup that's how it goes, whenever I come in for parts for my Camaro they act like I'm stupid.

them: what do you need help with sir?
me: I need this part for my engine.
              them: whats the make/model/year
me: well my car never came with the engine in it, and its not stock, and the motor is newer than 83, but if it helps you its a 83 Camaro with a 355 in it
them: sir it doesn't look like your car is in the computer so we cant help you.
me: ... I just told you my car wasn't....... nevermind give me the part from an 88 suburban
them: oh.. there is the part you were looking for...
              me: ugh...

when I first did my engine swap this is how it went at autopart stores, 9 times out of 10 when I goto an autoparts store I have to deal with a woman, and MOST of the time they don't know what they are talking about unless the computer tells them what to do, I only say most of the time because I went to O'reillys and there was a girl there that knew more about a my Camaro than I did haha.

side note: I'm a pretty laid back guy.. but some douche at autozone made me really mad once to the point I threw a screwdriver at him hahaha.. it can be very frustrating trying to deal with people who don't have any idea what they are talking about.. but they act like they do anyways...

problem is they are only trained to know the computer system, no mechanical background is required.

I work at O'Reillys too. I'm lucky that pretty much all people at my store have at least somewhat of a clue as to whats what.

i manage a autozone, when i first hired in you didnt need no experience with cars, only retail experience because thats what they want, for you to sell crap+extras

but i get alot of people askign for one part and meaning something else, id say i run into more dumbass people then dumb parts people. but of course the area might be a factor in some cases lol

However not to many people want to burn there hand on the exhaust manifolds while they are removing hot spark plugs. You can still do a compression check on a cold engine, but the reading won't be as good as a warm engine.

I have to defend the auto store clerks. They pull up the computer displays to insure they get you the correct part. When we as a customer have different engines we are the ones that have to give them corect info. When I go for B's car I just tell them a 95 z28 lt1 engine, unless its a body part then I tell them 94 camaro v6.

I once had a guy yell at me because he asked me for a heatsink but there weren't any in the store. Turns out he was looking for heatshrink tubing. Fun day.
