  • Timing

So if you need to advance timing before top dead center (BTDC) in order to allow the fuel/air to achieve full burn and maximize the downward force created by the explosion, does that mean when you have heads and cam since more air is getting in would you advance the timing setting of the burn sequence even earlier than the previous degree?

Also since the heat of the engine is taken into consideration if you put in a 160* thermostat and cooling fans on earlier would you be able to run more advance timing?

If I can recall I was reading an article saying more advance timing creates more power at lower rpms. If you retard timing you lose low end power but gain top end.

This seems to me to only be for distributor engines because there is no spark map which the timing changes with rpm, since the distributor is bolted into one place only applying one timing.

Or am I just completely wrong? Hahaha

dist has weights and vacuum advance to control timing per rpm

        Things affect timing:
Manifold pressure, engine speed, engine temperature, cylinder bore, compression ration, character of fuel, throttle angle, octane rating, plus others.
