  • Power Steering Pump Going Out?

I was driving my Camaro today, and all of a sudden it felt like the steering wheel was fighting me. I still had power steering but it feels like I am hitting the wheel stops. The fluid level was a little above the cold mark, but not in the add mark. Is this a sign of the pump going out or the gearbox going out?

I'm going to watch this thread because I had the same thing happen to me while I was on my way to and from Woodward on Friday. If I was stopped, I had no power steering unless I gave it gas and upped the RPMs.

Did it just quit or did it come and go?

It comes and goes. Almost feels like it was running out of fluid even though its full. I don't have full steering range. Driving it at decent speeds it was okay as long as I didn't have to crank the wheel. But when it acts up, it feels like the pump is fighting me to turn the wheels.

And it seems like it only acts up at idle and really slow speeds.

Is there any "moaning" when you turn the wheel?
Sounds like the pump to me.

No moaning from the pump. I am pretty sure its the pump, I just want to make sure before I go and buy one.

Note to self. Check belt tension first...
The P/S Belt was loose. Re adjusted the P/S belt and the power steering works fine. My only concern is I had to adjust it all the way out, and the belt is still a little loose to me.( I don't know the spec on belt deflection) I wonder if we got the wrong belt kyle.

The belt is the same size as the other one Jake.
